The UNC Highway Safety Research Center is looking for a creative, motivated, articulate, organized professional who writes well to join our strategic communications and outreach team. This is a full-time public communications manager position responsible for supporting communications needs and technology transfer activities for the Collaborative Sciences Center for Road Safety, Vision Zero for Youth, and other HSRC projects and activities.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
This position requires a candidate with both proven, strategic communications experience and a track record of successfully supporting multiple projects' communications needs through the entire lifecycle, from inception to dissemination, including tracking reporting requirements along the way. An ideal candidate will have experience working (or a high degree of interest working) in an academic research environment and interest in thinking strategically about growing the reach of projects and initiatives. The ideal candidate will be creative, driven and a self-starter, comfortable in both lead and contributory roles in communications and project tracking activities (e.g., helping to collaboratively develop and implement strategic communications and tech transfer plans/activities) as part of a four-person communications team at HSRC. Qualified candidates must demonstrate the following:
Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
Ability to creatively brainstorm, develop and edit strategic communications and marketing materials, including: newsletter articles, announcements, presentations, annual reports, social media posts, and fact sheets;
Ability to manage multiple projects with acute attention to detail, prioritize workload and meet deadlines;
Ability to develop and edit content for and maintain websites using various CMS programs;
High degree of familiarity with, or be a quick study on, a wide variety of communications platforms and tools (e.g., GoToMeeting, MailChimp, YouTube, social media, WordPress, etc.).
Ability to travel occasionally and represent projects in a professional manner; and
Flexible and able to adjust quickly to shifting priorities.
In addition to the above, the ideal candidate will have experience:
Developing and implementing strategic communications plans and success disseminating research information to target audiences;
Writing and editing documents to align with specific organizational styles, guidelines and rules;
Working (or a high degree of interest working) in an academic research environment;
Coordinating and managing in-person and digital events, including annual meetings, symposiums, webinars, trainings, conferences, etc.;
Developing ideas for and leading marketing activities through social media channels (e.g., Twitter and Facebook);
Managing the production of print materials, from concept and writing to finished project;
Translating research or technical information to the media and general public;
Using, or be a quick study on, a wide variety of communications platforms and tools (e.g., GoToMeeting, MailChimp, YouTube, social media, WordPress, etc.)
5 or more years of related experience is preferred.
