The Director of Athletics provides leadership and vision for the athletics department to ensure program effectiveness, continuous improvement, and positive experiences for student-athletes on and off the field. The Director of Athletics is also responsible for planning, directing and evaluating the operational, financial and personnel activities of the athletic department within the context of institutional, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), and NCAA rules, policies and procedures. New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) is committed to student success in the classroom as well as in competition and supports the NCAA Division II Make It Yours initiative. Three main components of a successful athletic director at NMHU would be as follows: 1) Providing great academic and athletic experiences; 2) Producing high graduation rates of student-athletes; and 3) having competitive individuals and teams that win and produce championships.
The New Mexico Highlands Athletic Department supports 12 NCAA Division II programs and participates in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. NMHU’s men’s basketball program is coming off an RMAC Tournament championship and an NCAA Division II Tournament appearance during the 2018-19 season. The NMHU women’s track and field program has been amongst the best in a very tough RMAC over the past decade, winning the RMAC Outdoor Championships and finishing seventh at the NCAA Championships in 2018 while collecting 11 individual national championships by five different athletes since the program started in 2006 – including an individual national championship from sophomore Annie Topal in the triple jump in 2019. This past season, NMHU baseball program produced the RMAC Academic Player of the Year, the RMAC Player of the Year and a third-team All-American in Auggie Francis while the NMHU football program is coming off its best season since 2012.
The university is located in Las Vegas, New Mexico, a community which enjoys a rich southwest history teeming with fascinating legends and cultural overlays at the stunning juncture of the Great Plains and the Sangre de Cristo mountains, both of which offer outstanding opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and camping as well as skiing in the winter.
In 1835, Las Vegas was officially founded as Senora de Los Dolores de Las Vegas or Our Lady of Sorrows of the Meadows. Although Las Vegas was considered part of New Mexico following the Mexican war, it had a rich and vast history with the Paleo-Indians and the Anasazi and Mogollon cultures. The town was a thriving farming town that celebrated an annual fiesta honoring saints James and Ann for providing the water needed to feed the community. This celebration became known as the Fourth of July Fiestas in 1888. Las Vegas continues to celebrate the fiestas annually with food, entertainment, parades and activities.
?Upon becoming part of the United States, Las Vegas also became the largest community in the Southwest and housed some of the most wanted rebels. Later in the years, the Santa Fe Railroad ran tracks through the town, attracting various cultures and making Las Vegas the central location for ice distribution along the Gallinas River in the Montezuma Pond.
Las Vegas was the historic home of many economic and cultural endeavors such as filmmaking, ice distribution, theater performance, railroad travels, Harvey houses, gold and silver mining, cowboy parades and so much more. The growth created West Las Vegas and East Las Vegas which were later combined and made into one town but still maintaining the East and West division and cultures.
A visit to Las Vegas, New Mexico is like stepping back in time...a place where “landmarks, legends and lore” come to life in New Mexico’s favorite and best preserved outdoor architectural museums and National treasure with 5 MainStreet historic districts and over 900 buildings listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
New Mexico is also well known for its delicious Hispanic Foods. The Las Vegas food scene provides the best in traditional Northern New Mexican cuisine along with so many others. Visitors and residents can always find something to tempt their taste buds and a landscape to warm their hearts.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate for this position will dutifully fulfill the following responsibilities:
Provide administrative leadership and supervision for coaches, staff, and student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics to include
Recommendations for the appointment and removal of personnel
Orientating, training, developing, and evaluating of personnel
Effective communication within the Athletics Department and with campus and external constituencies
Meet regularly with the coaches and staff for informational, planning, and other purposes including establishing performance-based goals for the programs
Developing budget recommendations for and monitoring the approved operating budgets of the Department and each sport, to include approval of travel and purchases of equipment and supplies
Assuring compliance with all NCAA, institutional, state, and federal requirements for Title IX and the eligibility of athletes to participate in intercollegiate athletics from initial recruiting through graduation
Work closely with the NMHU Financial Aid Office to ensure that financial awards to student-athletes (scholarship, tuition waivers) are in compliance with NCAA regulations and federal financial aid rules
Establishing and administering departmental operating policies and procedures
Establish and oversee policies that promote student-athlete welfare, safety, sportsmanship, academic success, and athletic success in all sports to include
Development of a system to monitor and assist with the academic progress of student-athletes that defines the role of coaches and other university student support services
Increased retention and graduation rates for student athletes
Work with university personnel to coordinate and oversee student success initiatives and awareness of campus resources for student-athletes to include, but not limited to, transition to university life; academic support (tutoring/mentoring, supplemental instruction, student support services); career services; workshops and trainings on expectations, student code of conduct, and other student engagement and success initiatives.
Addressing disciplinary and other issues involving student athletes and/or personnel by utilizing approved protocols and prescribed outlines for student/employee due process.
Coordination between coaches and athletic trainers working with student athletes on health and well-being matters, personal as well as mental health issues, treatment of injuries, and training guidelines
Appropriate oversight for the supervision and training for student athletes.
Training regarding good sportsmanship and expectations of all personnel and student athletes
Providing proper supervision of events and crowd control
Develop and provide leadership for those activities tied to building external support for NMHU Athletic programs
Coordinate all fund raising, grant writing, and public relations efforts for athletics with the Vice President for Advancement, the coaches, and any external support groups
Establish effective fundraising programs to close the funding gap between State and student support and the funding necessary for a strong and competitive intercollegiate athletics program
Provide leadership in the evaluation of facility needs and identification of possible funding sources for projects
Work with groups such as the H-Club to recognize and involve outstanding alumni in building Highlands’ tradition of athletic success
Oversee and participate in a sports information program that meets all RMAC and NCAA requirements and promotes all sports and individual athletic success as appropriate
Provide oversight and approve any special athletic, team, and camp events
Represent Athletics with the RMAC, NCAA, and any other appropriate athletic association
Coordinate the scheduling of athletic contests and assigning of game officials with the RMAC and others involved
Represent Athletics within the University community
Serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet
Work with the Faculty Athletic Representative, Faculty Athletic Committee, and other faculty groups to coordinate academic and athletic scheduling and other expectations of student-athletes
Coordinate the scheduling of athletic facilities to provide adequate access for intramural programs and general recreational activities as well as the practice and performance needs of the intercollegiate sports
Work with the Office of Housing and Student Conduct to coordinate arrangements for on-campus student housing and ensure that such things as room waivers and residential assignments for student-athletes are in compliance with NCAA and university policies.
Has a professional demeanor and personal presentation in dealing with people and the ability to relate well to students, staff, faculty and administration, both personally and professionally within the University structure as well as with public relations in the community and with other institutions.
Perform other related duties as assigned or needed to build a strong athletics program.
The successful candidate for this position must have a Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of intercollegiate athletic administration experience, three (3) years of which were in a supervisory/managerial role with direct budgetary and personnel management experience; or, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience required.

Possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver's license. Selection of an out of state candidate will require possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's license within sixty (60) days of employment.
Be willing to work evenings, weekends and odd hours as needed to effectively perform the job.
The successful candidate for this position would preferably meet the following qualifications
Demonstrated success with revenue generation and fundraising
Collegiate coaching experience
Master’s degree in Sports Administration, Business, Educational Leadership, or Exercise and Sport Science
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are necessary to optimally perform the job duties and responsibilities:
Knowledge and familiarity with acceptable intercollegiate athletic program standards and operations
Knowledge and familiarity with regulations governing federal, state, and institutional financial aid
Knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other regulations regarding disclosure of educational records and other personally identifiable information to third parties, parents, media, etc.
Knowledge of NCAA DII and RMAC rules and regulations
Knowledge of and compliance with the Cleary Act
Demonstrated ability to become familiar with and implement University policies and procedures and conduct proper actions related to personnel matters
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective budgeting principles and practices
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong technology literacy for internal and external purposes
Demonstrated ability to promote programs and generate revenue which includes securing donations and sponsorships
Demonstrated ability to establish, monitor, and meet deadlines
Demonstrated ability to supervise and evaluate the performance of staff, coaches, and students
Demonstrated ability to plan and implement steps necessary for a competitive athletic program
Demonstrated ability to research and analyze data and reports and incorporate the results into decision-making and planning efforts
Demonstrated ability to provide oversight in counseling and advising pre-college and college student athletes
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with non-athletic campus entities to ensure student success
Demonstrated competency that encourages ethical behavior, increases awareness of student-athletes, and provides resources to address potential concerns
