The Rockefeller University seeks a Science Writer to join Communications and Public Affairs. The Science Writer will write news stories to publicize discoveries made in Rockefeller labs, and contribute other editorial content to our external and internal communications channels. Working closely with other members of the CPA team, the Science Writer will conceptualize story ideas, create polished and engaging copy, manage projects assigned to freelancers, and ensure that our products meet the high standards of the office and the university. Will also work with colleagues on the editorial and digital teams to elevate the university's profile in the digital space. Responsibilities will include reporting on scientific discoveries across a broad spectrum of bioscience disciplines, interviewing scientists and covering campus events such as scientific lectures, producing web content such as faculty profiles, community news, and social media posts, and contributing to Rockefeller's magazine Seek, its annual report, and other university publications. The Science Writer will develop and maintain working relationships with faculty members and stay abreast of their ongoing work and newsworthy publications, work with and assign stories to freelance writers, and proofread, fact check, and perform administrative tasks as needed.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, or in biological sciences required; Master's degree or equivalent work experience preferred. A minimum of five years of experience writing about biomedical research for lay audiences in a communications, journalism, or PR setting required. Must have education, background, or strong interest in bioscience, as well as the ability to work with highly technical material in a variety of bioscience specialties (neuroscience, genomics, immunology, structural biology, cancer biology, physics, medical sciences, and more). Strong editorial judgment as well as diplomacy and interpersonal skills required. Must have strong attention to detail and accuracy, and be able to work independently to produce concise, polished, lively, and accurate copy under tight deadlines.
