Advertised Summary Job Description: Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, the Senior Director of Media Relations will develop a comprehensive Media Relations strategy that promotes a unified voice and represents best-in-class media to support a diverse agenda at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) Engage stakeholders to ensure that the media relations strategy aligns with the needs of CUMC. Develops and executes a media relations plan to clarify CUMC's brand identity, build and solidify its reputation as a center of excellence and leader in research, education and patient care. Provide leadership, vision, and management for the media team. Set annual goals and objectives for the team as a whole and for individual staff members. Support the growth and development of a high functioning team. Develop metrics for team success and evaluate staff and unit success against established metrics. Contacts media about specific pitches related to the medical center. Organizes, writes, and edits media materials. Secures and initiates media coverage and public visibility of CUMC that spans science, medical education, health professional issues, medical and scientific advances, and trends in medical and health-related care, research, and education on all media platforms, including both legacy and new or digital media. Synthesizes information and provides analysis.
Exercise leadership to ensure that the communications from across all CUMC units are consistent and coordinated, and reflect the overall mission of CUMC. Provide overall leadership to media team members while also working with internal and external stakeholders to meet established goals, and upholding CUMC shared mission, core values and leadership principles. Primary strategist for developing, producing and overseeing a wide range of multimedia content for CUMC. Work on large-scale communications projects for enhancing the presence of CUMC print and online communication. Create and execute media initiatives to both internal and external audiences. Manages CUMC's response to media inquiries about sensitive issues and events that have the potential to damage the national reputation of the organization. Coordinates and plans media events. Works with development officers, public affairs specialists, health care administrators, physicians, scientific researchers, and other faculty to advance public communications and media coverage vital to the success and reputation of the medical center. Must work both independently and collaboratively in this setting and with various internal and external partners.
Work with Chief Communications Officer and other senior staff to manage crisis communications for all of CUMC's constituencies. Stay on top of emerging trends in the communications and media relations arena. Serves as member of medical center Emergency Management Operations Team and provide leadership in the management of faculty and campus communications related to significant and/or disruptive events. Create and distribute talking points to assist with crisis mitigation.
Understand the importance of new media and collaborate with the team to integrate online and new media strategies into the overall communications strategy. Oversee the production of a wide range of multimedia content for CUMC Website and social media sites. Provide direction for the creation of content for podcasts, video profiles, digital photo galleries, slide shows, interactive graphics, and work closely with internal IT staff to implement website and other applicable media outlets.
Develop media relations strategies for CUMC Communications Office in response to immediate requests or needs. Create press releases for special announcements, develop presentation materials, prepare speeches and briefings, conduct fact-checking for CUMC Communications and other senior leadership. Other duties as assigned.
General Minimum Qualifications: Requires a bachelor's degree and a minimum of 10 years of related experience in healthcare or science public relations in an agency or comparable setting. Must be a strong writer. Proven leadership and management skills. Excellent client contact skills with excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Collaborative, supportive and enthusiastic work style.
Demonstrated ability to master complex healthcare and scientific issues. Experience developing and managing strategic media relations initiatives with significant public profile. Must have a proven record of success in working with a broad range of influential news media. Must exhibit creativity in programs and approaches and an ongoing ability to adapt to change.
Project management skills. Must be able to articulate communications strategy, craft written plans when needed, and measure and present results. Must have proven ability to manage sensitive media issues that have the potential to damage the national reputation of the organization.
Must demonstrate clear thinking and poise while working with senior organizational leaders during stressful situations. Must be able to write effective press statements and responses that incorporate input from CUMC leaders and experts.
Sophisticated judgment, discretion and the ability to keep confidences. Ability to work well with a diverse population and build strong partnership
Strong teamwork, diplomacy, and outreach abilities required. Accountability for one's work product and a demonstrated ability to carry projects through to successful completion.
Additional Specific Minimum Qualifications: Experience with a wide range of communications activities, including high-level media relations, social media strategy and management, and digital content development and production.
Must have working knowledge of how top-tier and other media use social media channels and manage CUMC interactions with media via these channels. Must have 5 or more years of hands-on social media experience, with proven ability to engage professionally via social media and supervise institutional or corporate social media channels.
Must be adept at working in a fast-paced complex environment and function as a leader who helps the team operate successfully. Must be able to manage and use available resources to increase efficiency and positive results.
Must have experience in supervising employees and an ability to develop and manage budgets related to media relations and public relations activities.
Must have proven facility in working with scientific subjects.
Must have proven track record handling media relations in crisis or emergency situations.
Must have a professional and friendly demeanor, and a commitment to teamwork and client focus.
Must be flexible, organized, and capable of performing multiple tasks. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Power Point, Excel, Word.)
