COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER/SCIENTIFIC WRITER , Brain and Cognitive Sciences (BCS) , to serve as strategist and leader for the full range of departmental communications-internal, external and executive-that promote the department's research and academic programs. Will direct, coordinate, and support communication and public relations efforts; manage BCS's presence/message across print and digital news channels while ensuring cohesive branding, style, and voice; provide editorial and content oversight for the department's website, newsletter, and scientific writing; conceptualize and write science reports for lay readers; attend MIT events and science conferences; provide strategic executive communications support for department head and director of strategic scientific development to support fund-raising and other high-level initiatives; and stay up-to-date with recent scientific findings and activities.
REQUIRED : bachelor's degree in communications or related field; at least five years' professional communications/public relations experience; experience with project management, communication technologies, social media, and public relations; strong interpersonal, relationship management, writing, editorial, and presentation skills; experience with graphics/imaging tools; and experience with or capacity for developing creative and entrepreneurial approaches to marketing and communications. Must be able to describe science concepts to scientific and lay audiences; collaborate across organizational boundaries; manage competing priorities and deadlines; and be flexible, adapt, and learn quickly. M.S./Ph.D. in relevant biological/computational/cognitive science field; experience in a scientific and/or academic setting; photography and video editing experience; experience with Microsoft Office and Apple iWork (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Pages, Keynote); Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere, Acrobat Pro); social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit, Pinterest, Vimeo, Flickr); social media management platforms (Hootsuite, Later); and content management platforms (Drupal, WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Medium, Tumblr) are preferred.
