Under the general supervision of the Athletic Director, acts as a liaison and source of information for the interested public and supports the athletic programs by preparing and distributing promotional materials pertinent to the men’s and women’s athletic programs to the various news media, national athletic affiliations, conference members and general public.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1.Responsible for designing, creating, and dispersing LSSU Athletic media guides and promotional materials, including but not limited to brochures, schedule cards, newsletters, calendars, posters and other materials related to the promotion of the athletic programs and keeping marquees current with scheduled events.
2.Responsible for the promotion of the Athletics Department, Coaching staff, and Athletes by means of publications, press releases and news media coverage, web page content, and social media platforms. Promoting includes but is not limited to outstanding individual and team performance at all levels, new staff appointments and promotions, and special honors and awards.
3.Arrange and supervise press conferences and prepare voice reports for local, state and national radio stations.
4.Participate in regular communication with the coaching staff to exchange ideas and facilitate the promotion of the respective programs.
5.Prepare and maintain current sports mailing list.
6.Keep statistics including individual and team records and file individual and team statistics with appropriate organizations/conference offices and NCAA.
7.Prepare record files for archives.
8.Ensure photography/video coverage to enhance coverage of intercollegiate programs.
9.Responsible for coordinating off-ice officials for hockey and scorer’s table for basketball and volleyball; schedules National Anthem singers for hockey, volleyball and basketball; and schedules announcers/music personnel for hockey, volleyball and basketball.
10.Schedule, train and maintain time cards for sports information student workers and supervise sports information intern(s) and student staff.
11.Facilitates media coverage for all athletic events; travels with hockey as needed and limited travel with Division II teams as directed by the Director of Athletics;. Maintain contact and good relations with various public groups, organizations and individuals (i.e. speaking engagements, public relations events); entertains news media and representatives of community groups; maintains a close working relationship with the Public Relations Office to assure coordination and exchange of information and news releases; maintains a relevant media contact list. Establishes rapport and direct communication with news media, national affiliations and sports information directors from conference and independent colleges and universities; plays host to news media and visiting sports information directors, provides information required and attend post-game contacts with media. Preform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field; active background in college athletics; knowledge of college athletic department policies and procedures; two to three years experience in sports reporting, typing, web site management and statistical procedures; ability to relate to staff; student workers, athletes and the various news media; experience with The Automated Statcrew System preferred.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS Adequate health and fitness to maintain long hours, busy schedule, and travel with teams and to conferences as required. Use of gross motor skills in promotional and record keeping activities; use of fine motor skills in preparation of publications and promotional material and record keeping; ability to see, hear and speak clearly, with or without aids, for reporting, recording and broadcasting games and events; ability to provide media coverage and represent the University in publicity activities.
