The Director of Development is a member of the Golden Gopher Fund team with the responsibility to secure major gifts ($50,000 and above) in support of the department’s top priorities. This position will actively manage a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects while working in coordination with other members of the GGF team and with the University of Minnesota Foundation. A focus of this position is to assist in department efforts to identify and cultivate new donors to Gopher Athletics. Responsibilities: 1. Major Gift Development (80%) • Identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors with a specific focus on major gift prospects. • Assist fundraising initiatives to define and articulate priorities, identify prospective donors, strategically engage and cultivate prospects and steward past donors. • Develop an annual plan of work, including specific fundraising, prospect development and programmatic goals with an emphasis on achieving established standards and metrics. • Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of the philanthropic priorities to effectively present its case to prospects and donors. • Builds and maintains a portfolio of approximately 100 major gift prospects to ensure that timely steps are taken toward solicitation, closure, and stewardship. Performance expectations for this level of gift officer include approximately 6 solicitations per year at $25,000 or more. Take timely and strategic steps in moving prospects through the major gift cycle of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Utilize various giving methods such as current, deferred giving, and non-cash gifts. • Total annual gift production expectations for this level of position range from approximately $100,000 to $500,000. Works closely with prospect management and development leaders to set appropriate annual goals. • Clear and coordinate prospective donors through appropriate procedures to ensure effective solicitation of the donor that maximizes the gift to the University and the donor’s satisfaction with the institution. • Serve as a member of the overall development team by collaborating with colleagues across disciplines and other Foundation staff on donor strategies. 2. Perform development-related administrative duties (10%) • Complete, file and maintain accurate, relevant and timely reports and records of donor/prospect contacts by utilizing database, employing discretion while recording information of relevance to appropriate individuals. • Attend University and external major gift cultivation events. • Have a significant presence at athletics events throughout the year. • Assist with budget management as needed. • Prepare reports and other required information as requested. • Assist development leadership with major donor/campaign strategies and special projects as requested. 3. Work with assigned sport programs on fundraising strategies and communication. (10%) • Maintain communication with coaching and support staffs. • Coordinate donor communication. • Provide guidance on sport-specific fundraising initiatives.
Minimum of two years of professional development experience in individual giving, with demonstrated ability to promote and successfully solicit major gifts; or four or more years of experience in marketing, consultative sales, public relations, financial advisement or related field where you were responsible for cultivating/soliciting and maintaining long-term, trusting client relationships (either individual or business) for provision of services.
