Reporting to the Dean of the School of Professional Studies, and serving as a member of the School's Executive Committee, the Associate Dean is responsible for:
Contributing to the strategic planning and operational oversight of the School as a member of the Executive Committee
Developing and administering a coordinated effort to establish and strengthen relationships with targeted internal and external School constituents
Raising private funds and developing external sponsorships to support the Dean's strategic initiatives for the School
Overseeing effective recognition and stewardship programs for all alumni, donors, and friends
The Associate Dean will work closely with the Chief of Staff in providing strategic leadership and management support for all areas of the Office of the Dean-including External Affairs, Governance, Public Relations and Communications, and Outreach, and Office Management. The Associate Dean oversees the budget of the External Affairs Team, including funds earmarked for business development, fundraising, alumni affairs, and board development.
Specifically, in partnership with the Dean, the Associate Dean will focus on five core areas:
Strategy & Management. Serves as a member of the Executive Committee; Co-Chairs the Reputation, Relationships, and Development Committee; and provides management and leadership support to the Office of the Dean.
Stakeholder Management. Cultivates and provides leadership and oversight to the Board of Overseers; Executives in Residence; Alumni Advisory Council; and targeted list of 'SPS Friends'.
Development. Fosters relationships with corporate partners, targeted donors, and other friends that result in financial support and sponsorships that advance the Dean's objectives for the School. Specifically charged with securing an endowment and sponsorship for the Center for the Future of Work and ongoing growth of the Annual Fund;
Alumni Engagement. Cultivates an engagement and support community for the School's global network of alumni. Oversees and partners with Executive Committee members in with the development and execution of Regional Alumni Forums, Reunion Weekend, Dean's Circles, End of Year Celebration, and Graduation.
Outreach. Serves as prominent representative for the School including speaking engagements, convenings, meetings, and written communications. Work closely with the Chief of Staff in support of targeted School initiatives including SPS Features, Dean's Happy Hours, Town Halls, Faculty Meetings, Alumni Master Classes, Talks@Columbia, Conferences, and convenings related to the Center for the Future of Work.
Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree is usually required or strongly desirable
8 years related experience
A master's degree is preferred
Demonstrated expertise is required in the following:
Business development, fundraising, alumni affairs, and/or community affairs
Relationship management and in cultivating/pursuing institutional and corporate relationships
Strategy, organizational management, and leadership
Qualified candidates must have:
Experience in leading and managing teams
Executive presence and an ability to be a high-level representative of the School
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills are required, along with exceptional attention to detail and strong organization and time management skills
The ability to perform non-routine work with ever-changing priorities
An entrepreneurial spirit
A proven consultative and client service approach to solving business problems and addressing new opportunities
Significant experience with the Office Suite of programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Visio)
