Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Communications & Outreach Specialist Communications & Engagement Assistant to join the Administration Department. This is a temporary 4 month, half-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.
The Ocean Twilight Zone (OTZ) Communications & Outreach Specialist is an important member of the OTZ team. The OTZ Project combines exacting science, innovative technology, and broad engagement to turn knowledge into actions that improve understanding of the planet and promote sustainability of ocean resources. The OTZ Project requires the successful integration of interdisciplinary science, technology, and engagement to explore and study the ocean's mesopelagic realm.
This position works with dozens of team members (both within and external to WHOI) across science, administrative, finance, advancement, and communications departments/offices. The primary area of responsibility is related to engagement and outreach efforts with the Project Manager working hand-in-hand with the OTZ Engagement Leadership Team and Communications Department staff to monitor, implement and coordinate communications efforts to successfully meet OTZ engagement goals. The OTZ Project Manager provides support to the goals and initiatives as defined by the OTZ Program Manager and the three Project Leads (Science, Technology and Engagement).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:
Ocean Twilight Zone Project Engagement and Communications
Develop and maintain an engagement calendar, and contribute (in coordination with communications staff) to audience building engagement efforts, such as identifying newsworthy events and stories, drafting content and visuals, connecting scientists with media specialists, coordinating speaking engagements and events, developing cruise outreach plans, monitoring social media and other outreach channels, and liaise between outside communications partners and contractors
Work closely with the OTZ Engagement Lead and Chief Communications Officer in the capacity of Engagement Implementation Manager to coordinate, schedule, track, and assist in the implementation of all facets of the OTZ Engagement Plan and provide internal communications and updates between the OTZ Project Office and Advancement/Communications teams
Coordinate with OTZ Principal Investigators on their project-level engagement activities, ensure that activities are aligned to the Engagement Plan priorities and are pre-approved/adequately budgeted by the Engagement Leadership Team
Maintain the OTZ website and public email list communications
Curate content and draft routine OTZ donor reports (monthly and quarterly) in collaboration with the OTZ Program Manager and WHOI Communications team.

DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Extra consideration will be given to candidates with a background that also includes additional high level skill sets, such as in computer/technology literacy, data and information management, outreach and engagement, and/or management of large-scale science projects.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Applicants should have a Master's degree (or higher) in science or engineering, excellent oral and written communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift less than 25 lbs independently; carry 10-25 lbs, 2 times per day. Visual abilities to include near, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively, talk and travel. Other physical tasks include occasional standing/walking; Physical duties are subject to change.
