The Digital Communications Manager is responsible for supporting the work of Civios, a repository for Public Affairs research, the Hubert Project, a global platform for multimedia public affairs learning materials, as well as implementing all digital communications strategies for the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.
The position includes project management, strategic planning, content development, communications/marketing/website maintenance and development, and requires a general understanding of best practices for digital communications tools and technology. This is a shared position between Technology Enhanced Learning and Communications with overlapping and similar responsibilities. The person in this position will divide their time equally between both departments and take direction from the Director of Academic and Information Technology and the Director of Communications.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT / STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS 50% • Maintain a content plan and editorial calendar for the School’s social media, website, and mass email to ensure consistent communications across channels • Write and edit promotional, feature, and news items for use in various digital and print materials • Collaborate with admissions, development, and School leadership to develop strategic communication campaigns around news and events, research, and recruitment • Advise faculty/staff on digital communications strategy to help build internal communications capacity • Oversee the daily operations of Civios (maintain workflows and strategy) and identify new opportunities to feature faculty and staff research • Produce digital learning materials and content: videos, case studies, and other mixed media • Communicate and disseminate completed Civios materials, including working with authors to deploy Knowledge Network • Collaborate with the U of M Libraries to integrate new University-wide tools and resources into Civios (University Digital Conservancy, Experts@Minnesota, ORCID iD, SEO and cataloging) • Manage the work of graduate research assistants in creating learning materials for Hubert Project and Civios • Research and evaluate funding and business sustainability opportunities for Civios • Monitor and evaluate the performance of Civios activities, reporting to the Advisory Board • Represent Civios at conferences and other events
SOCIAL MEDIA / DIGITAL MARKETING 20% • Manage the Humphrey School and Civios social media channels including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube • Write copy, source creative, and deploy campaigns that build our online social communities—increasing awareness of the School’s activities and fostering engagement with students, alumni, donors, and other key stakeholders • Monitor current social media trends and best practices • Enforce and evolve channel governance, serving as an advisor to faculty and staff • Use analytical tools to evaluate social media performance and modify strategies accordingly • Develop and implement digital marketing strategy for student recruitment in collaboration with the School’s admissions team • Execute paid social campaigns on Facebook and LinkedIn • Maintain budget, coordinate with FRWD to report on progress, adjust tactics, etc.
WEBSITE MANAGEMENT 20% • Drive strategic decisions of the Humphrey School, Civios, and Hubert Project websites with regard to content, navigation, accessibility, and usability • Serve as the main point of contact for changes and updates to School’s website content and fulfill submission requests • Collaborate with faculty and staff to revise their website content (style, layout, copy) • Monitor SiteImprove for enhancements to support SEO, usability, and accessibility • Collaborate with Academic Information Technology and Office of Information Technology to execute larger changes to the website • Regularly review and optimize content for formatting, style, and consistency • Maintain website style guide (naming conventions, best practices, etc.) • Use website analytics and content strategy to inform decisions
EMAIL MARKETING / SUPPORT 15% • Manage the School’s SalesForce Marketing Cloud (SMC) account and 10 business units, serving as the main internal contact for SMC account approval, training, and use • Implement internal standards for mass email and train staff on best practices • Write, edit, and distribute Humphrey School and Civios emails • Design new email templates that adhere to University and School brand standards • Participate in the University’s SMC User Group
Applications will be reviewed the week of July 15, 2019. Anticipated start date is August 26, 2019 or until the position is filled. The annual base salary is $47,000 to $54,000, based on skills, education, and experience.
Required Qualifications: • Requires BA/BS degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Art or related field plus 2 years professional experience, or 6 years combined equivalent education and experience • Experience with digital marketing strategy and implementation (website, social media, and email marketing) • Strong writing and editing skills
Preferred Qualifications: • Background in creating paid ads for Facebook and LinkedIn, as well as knowledge of paid search • Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite • Experience with Salesforce email marketing platform • Knowledge of basic video and audio editing • Ability to multi-task, self-starter with strong time-management skills
