The Communications Specialist for the Department of Animal Science will be an integral part of the Administrative team located in Haecker Hall. Reportting to the Administrative Director, this second-level professional position works closely with the Department Head, faculty, and other staff to provide professional communications and support to the department in its efforts to communication with internal and external stakeholders. This position will also work with college-level liaisons for communications, advancement, and events.
** The position is funded through June 2021. The Department of Animal Science aims to secure funding to continue the position beyond that date. **
Communications Planning, Development, & Implementation (50%) Work with administrative leadership to develop a strategic communications plan for the department in alignment with college recommendations. Outline plan for implementing strategic communications plan and deliver on measurable outcomes. Develop a content calendar for department communications. Develop content and manage pages for department website. Create and deliver external and internal newsletters. Coordinate social media presence. Work with faculty and instructors to develop marketing materials for department courses. Manage department digital signage in collaboration with Classroom Technical Services. Assist with other individual communication initiatives as needed.
Department Engagement (30%) Participate in department events to learn about mission, vision, focus, faculty research, and student activities to understand culture and trends. Coordinate communications within and across department committees. Work with department administration and faculty to identify, support, and manage applications and nominations for university, college, and professional association awards. Serve as project manager for department events and lead necessary decisions regarding space, food, and other logistics. Liaison with other event managers for department-sponsored meetings or events.
Development (20%) Work with college development office to expand and maintain donor and alumni relations, including developing a robust donor engagement strategy for the department. Participate in efforts intended to develop donations. Coordinate events that connect with friends and alumni of the department. Develop materials and communications to promote the image of the department with prospective donors and supporters.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field, plus two (2) years professional experience, or a combination of related education and professional experience totaling six (6) years. Documented professional experience in event planning, social media, marketing, or public relations.
Demonstrated Experience: Strategic leadership and strategic alignment of communications programs. Relationship building: Effectively working across organizational lines; forming productive alliances; and influencing others. Understanding of communications, marketing, and branding principles. Attention to detail.
Necessary Skills: Excellent communication skills (verbal, listening, writing, and proofing); Strong project management skills and ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously; Strong customer service orientation; Ability to quickly master new technologies; Ability to jump from the creative side of communication to the analytical side; Familiarity with email marketing solutions; Technical skills to create, practice or leverage social media tools.
Preferred Qualifications: Degree in Agricultural Communications & Marketing. Minimum two years of professional experience in event planning, communications, and advancement. Five or more years of professional business experience with increasing communications responsibilities. Familiarity with academic environments. Experience with Adobe Creative suite.
