The Philadelphia School (TPS) is seeking a Director of Communications for the 2019-2020 academic year. We are a PreK - 8 progressive/independent school located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with an enrollment of 475 students. Since our founding in 1972, The Philadelphia School has grown in size, complexity, and diversity. This growth has been rooted firmly in the progressive values with which our founders began: immersive learning, responsive pedagogy, and meaningful engagement with the world.
The Director of Communications is part of a two person comprehensive communications team at TPS. The Director (DoC) will work closely with their teammate, to provide cohesive, comprehensive, and compelling messages about TPS across all communication platforms and constituent groups. The communications team is structured as a program facing support team. The DoC will work collaboratively to communicate the programmatic, tactical, and mission driven work of school by developing and implementing a dynamic, comprehensive and strategic school wide communication, branding, and marketing plans, as well as social media strategies. The DoC will make tangible the school’s apirational mission statement by stewarding prospective parents, current/past parents, students,/alums and teachers continued investment and understanding of the school’s unique mission, student experiences, and TPS’s evolving programmatic work. The DoC must design and implement the changing communication needs and preferences of the various constituency demographics and stay abreast of trends that will impact and inform this work..
Contribute to the mission of the school by deepening internal constituencies’ understanding of the school’s mission, program and progressive practices. Co-develop and execute annual internal communication plan that engages internal constituents in the support and promotion of the school.
Promote the school’s mission, program and culture through communication efforts.
Align and collaborate with the other DoC and the Division Directors to create and direct a comprehensive publications program (concept, design, content, editorial, and production for paper and electronic communications) that reaches and influences the school’s target audiences.
Meet with Division (Program) director and advancement team or admissions team semi-monthly to refine cohesive messages across the year that reflect the needs of the community and cycle of the year..
Co- create and maintain the creative direction of the school’s website, online presence, and social media platforms.
Create alumni relation communication and cultivation plan in conjunction with Development office.
Be present at school events that require live streaming and work collaboratively with technology to broadcast event.
Maintain up-to-date data in the school’s email system.
Regularly update the TPS blog with school-related stories.
Work with all divisions and specialist teams, including athletics and the arts, to trumpet student activities and successes.
Co-create weekly communications to parents, faculty, and staff.
Collaborate with teachers to craft and edit their Weekly Class Notes in the Parent Portal.
Work with Division Directors to promote Program Team work, initiatives, and perspectives.
Develop and implement a crisis management communication plan.
Co-lead and train the Crisis Communication Team.
Update email and emergency system data as needed
Sendany updates from the emergency alert system
Update and share calendar related events with parents
Cultivate volunteer efforts in support of communication including weekly parent organization newsletters.
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in marketing or related field
Minimum of 3 to 5 years of relevant work experience
Up-to-date experience with the latest digital technologies and social media trends.
Strong communications, organizational, editing, and teaming skills are a must.
The ability to express our school’s views creatively.
Evidence of web design skills and publishing
Thorough knowledge of the most popular platforms; Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, Tumblr and more.
Strong management and strategic thinking skills are critical
Displays ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and video format.
Knowledge of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) best practices
Excellent analytical and time-management skills
Strong project management skills with ability to supervise multiple projects
