The University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology invites applications for one 100 %-time Junior Specialist position in the sub-specialty area of Vascular Research. Junior Specialist appointees will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in Pharmacology sub-specialties in the areas stated above. The incumbent will devote 90% of time to research, and 10% to university and public service as described below.
Research (90%): Successful candidates will participate in laboratory and/or human-subject studies. The incumbent will actively participate in creative activities including research presentation and publications. The candidate will assist the PI in performing experiments, including ex vivo measurements of arterial wall tension and diameter, immunostaining, proximity ligation assay, and confocal microscopy, among others. The candidate will contribute to data collection, analysis and putting together graphical representations of data for scholarly manuscripts as well as participating in writing, editing and reviewing the manuscript. Candidates will review relevant journal articles, participate in scientific discussions in both the lab setting and more formal venues such as the weekly journal club and lab meeting, the monthly departmental research in progress talks and when appropriate local national and international scientific meetings such as Davis cardiovascular symposium.
Service (10 %): The candidate is expected to contribute to University and Public service by mentoring undergraduate students, dissemination of experimental procedures/technical expertise to other research groups and consultation with IACUC and safety committees on campus. Candidates may also be expected to review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to their sub-specialty area. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Junior Specialist positions are short term, two-year maximum appointments based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in a related field is required by the start date of this position. Basic qualifications include appropriate lab experience in the appropriate sub-specialty area.
The candidate should have minimal one-year experience in laboratory or extensive research experience as an undergraduate researcher. The candidate should also have experience working with DNA, real-time PCR, and proximity ligation assay. The candidate should have experience in artery dissection, enzymatic digestion of arterial tissue to obtain cells. The candidate should also have expertise in arterial myography and should be familiar with the procedures for proper maintenance of whole arteries in culture. Experience with image analysis (e.g. image J, sparkan) and electrophysiology (pClamp) software, animal handling and animal colony management is highly desirable. Successful candidates have experience working in a team and can effectively communicate their knowledge to others.
Potential hazards in the laboratory may include human and animal tissue, adenoviruses and some carcinogenic substances.
