The Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority seeks a Legislative Specialist to maximize the Authority’s work with community groups, government partners, and environmental policy at the local and state level.

You understand the ins and outs of the political process and are comfortable to navigate relationships with individuals working at various levels of government. Your impeccable research skills will expand the Authority’s capacity to be ahead of new legislation that relates to and impacts the work of the Authority. You can effectively communicate the outcomes of your research. Additionally, you are able to build and maintain databases to record legislative action, critical dates, and priority meetings. You have outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and direct experience with persuasive writing techniques to convey importance of legislative matters related to the Authority’s mission.
At your core you possess strong administrative and communication skills; able to coordinate complex scheduling with internal and external stakeholders, drafting correspondence, and preparing presentation materials. You are supportive of the team effort and will provide administrative support to the External Affairs Manager through synthesizing meeting information, maintaining appropriate records and file systems, and providing timely response to inquiries or comments on the External Affairs Manager’s behalf. You are discerning in all that you do and are able to maintain confidentiality related to your work when appropriate.

The ideal candidate will possess the skills, education, and experience needed to be successful in this position. For example:
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in political science, governmental relations, natural resources policies, business, public administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience working in support of legislative or intergovernmental matters, environmental advocacy, or a related field is desirable;
A working knowledge of local and state legislative processes;
Confidence in the political world of nuance and strategy;
Effective written and verbal communication and public speaking skills;
Knowledge of research and reporting methods, techniques, and procedures.
Skill in complex scheduling tasks;
This position is required to take and pass a pre-employment background check.
Additional Salary Information: The salary range for this full-time, non-exempt position is $38.05 to $46.25 hourly, depending on experience and qualifications. To complement this salary, we offer a robust benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and their dependents – we cover 100% of the cost for these premiums. We participate in CalPERS retirement programs as well as offering a separate 457 Plan for tax deferred retirement savings. A basic life insurance policy is provided to all eligible employees with the option to purchase additional personal insurance benefits.
