Reporting to the Director of the Law Library, the Head of Public Services will have the following responsibilities:
Direct the daily operations of the Public Services unit, including recommending staffing levels and work schedules; hiring, training, evaluating and supervising those who work in the Unit, including 4 dual-degreed reference librarians, 4 staff members, and over fifty student employees; directly supervise 4 reference librarians and 2 staff members.
Set unit policies and procedures and coordinate work with leaders of other units and subunits.
Serve as a member of the Law Library’s management team advising the director of the Law Library.
Communicates and strategizes with the Law Library Director about all aspects of the management of the Unit and administration of the Law Library.
Participate in collection development for all areas of the collection.
Serve as a member of the Classification of Librarians Committee and complete librarian promotion reviews.
Serve on or chair library committees and participate in other activities that advance the library’s mission and promote the role of the law library within the law school.
Ensure the successful performance of the following specialized functions:
Reference and information, Circulation and Interlibrary Loan services. This includes coordinating and supervising the management of the Reference/Information Desk, Circulation Desk, Entrance Station, Reading Room Desk, and the Interlibrary Loan service.
Faculty Services (Phone Page document delivery service and the Faculty Research service).
Research instruction and orientation sessions for new and visiting faculty, student journals, and others.
Research consultations for students, researchers, faculty, and other library users.
Overseeing, assigning, and supervising work on creating research guides, online tutorials, and other content for the Law Library’s website.
Overseeing Lexis, Westlaw, and Bloomberg liaison and password functions.
Law Library scanning and photocopy service.
Coordinating student and faculty outreach and public relations initiatives related to services
Monitoring and keeping up with new initiatives and technologies related to the provision of reference, document delivery, research, interlibrary loan and related services as well as in legal publishing.
J.D. from ABA accredited law school.
Master’s degree from an A.L.A. accredited school of information or library science.
At least 4 years of experience working as a reference or faculty services librarian in an academic law library.
Successful supervisory experience.
Strong problem-solving and leadership skills.
Proven ability to work effectively with other decision-makers.
Substantial knowledge of and proficiency with a wide range of legal information sources and research methods.
A thorough knowledge of legal systems.
A strong service orientation.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team.
Ability to learn and understand complex Law Library practices and procedures.
Creativity and adaptability in the face of multiple simultaneous demands.
Ability to work evenings and weekends at the reference desk on a rotating basis.
Licensed to practice law in one or more U.S. states (active or inactive).
Ability to work with foreign language materials.
