SBMS is currently seeking candidates for the position of Communications Manager. This role will work in close collaboration with the Directors of Admissions and Development, while reporting to the Head of School, to advance the school’s mission and to achieve educational and operational goals.
The Communications Manager will lead, plan, direct and implement effective strategies for all marketing and communications on behalf of SBMS in order to raise SBMS’ visibility, advance its brand, and articulate clear messaging to internal and external constituencies. The Manager will oversee and actively participate in the creation, design, budget and production of regularly produced school publications and campaigns, both digitally and in print as well as represent the school before a wide array of constituents and community members. Additionally, the Manager will lead an integrated program that includes advertising, public and media relations, digital communications including the school website, social media, and crisis notification.
The Communications Manager responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Thoroughly communicate the history, culture, traditions and constituencies of SBMS;
Develop and implement an integrated, comprehensive and strategic Communications and Marketing Plan that uses analytics to drive increased engagement across prospective and current constituencies to build overall awareness of SBMS and its programs among key audiences, resulting in increased engagement, support of, and familiarity with SBMS;
Ensure synergy across each school department’s initiatives, including storytelling, branding, and campaigns, in addition to articulating their purpose and ongoing work;
Ensure brand and messaging quality and consistency, including continuity of the SBMS brand and logo, while establishing guidelines to apply across all departments, activities and events at the school and among professional and volunteer leadership;
In collaboration with the Director of Admissions, design strategies and implement concrete plans to increase quality student applications and maintain prospective student and family interest;
In collaboration with the Director of Development, design strategies and implement concrete plans to capitalize on increased visibility and clear branding of the school to drive increased contributed revenue;
Take lead in designing graphics for campaigns, departments, and school events (including social media graphics, logos, infographics, and other);
Actively manage all SBMS official social media accounts and platforms;
Plan for and deploy all digital activities, including: website updates, online campaigns, email marketing, social media and digital content production;
Plan and manage the department budget in order to maximize the effectiveness of all communications. This includes bidding out production of materials to outside vendors when appropriate;
Manage both the internal and external communications calendar;
Create and execute an effective public relations plan and program that regularly places SBMS in local media, including writing and distributing press releases and maintaining an updated press list;
Review, revise, and update the school’s crisis communication plan as necessary, in collaboration with appropriate SBMS stakeholders;
Actively engage in professional development in order to remain current in best practices and trends related to independent school communications, social media, and effective marketing and advertising strategies;
Serve as editor, creative director, and primary writer for The Diamond newsletter magazine (3x/year);
Create a template for and draft a compelling annual report every fiscal year;
Develop and strengthen strategic community partnerships; and
Supervise outside contract vendors, including designers, videographers, photographers, print and mailing houses.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED AND DESIRED):
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in a specialty area that delivers skill sets relevant to communications (communications, marketing, brand management, etc.)
3+ years of related work experience
Superior writing, editing, and verbal skills
Experience with Constant Contact or similar email marketing platforms
Demonstrated experience growing social media platforms
Mastery of Microsoft Office and Adobe technologies
Proficiency in managing CSM platforms, particularly Wordpress
Demonstrated knowledge of graphic design software, process and principles
Ability to identify a strong story and have a good understanding of storytelling and brand marketing
A “big picture” thinker who is skilled at planning, prioritizing, organizing, and following through.
Superior communication and interpersonal skills
Highly organized and detail oriented
Self-starter who excels at multitasking, managing competing deadlines and maintains a great attitude when working under pressure
Proficiency in Lightroom, Photoshop, and/or digital asset management systems
Experience working with Blackbaud platforms
Experience working with HootSuite or similar social media management platform
Interest in working with students through elective programs or school expeditions
