The Communications Department is currently searching for a Discovery Center Assistant to join their team. This is a regular, casual, non-exempt position, and is not eligible for benefits.
Under the direction of the Discovery Center Office and Discovery Center Manager, supports the operation of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's Discovery Center during its six-month season
Ensures smooth daily operation of the WHOI Discovery Center and or Visitor Center, the Institution's primary visitor facility. Responsibilities include opening and closing the facility, cleaning displays and exhibits, and staffing gift shop and entry desk, as needed. Works cooperatively with other Discovery Center and Institution staff and the WHOI volunteer corps.
Sells merchandise in the Discovery Center gift shop and or Visitor Center. Responsibilities include operating computerized point-of-sales systems; handling receipts and deposits; following detailed procedures for daily closeouts; and restocking, folding, pricing, and counting inventory.
Greets customers, visitors, and the general public. Responsibilities include providing accurate information about WHOI programs and activities.
With other staff, carries out above responsibilities on other Discovery Center Coordinator's days off.
As deemed necessary by supervisor
DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
High school education required; college education helpful.
Experience in public information and retail operations recommended.
Familiarity with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and vicinity helpful.
Required attributes include good customer relations, tact, friendliness, enthusiasm, flexibility, ability to take direction, and care and accuracy with receipts and records.
Familiarity with computer systems in a retail setting helpful.
Must be able to work weekends
Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift less than 25 lbs independently; carry 0-10 lbs multiple times per day. Visual abilities to include near, far, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions. Other physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing/walking; use of hands for basic /fine grasping and manipulation, reaching above and below the shoulders, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, twisting, and stooping. Physical duties are subject to change.
