Professional association located in Bethesda, MD is seeking a Manager for Communications and Social Media. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) represents over 24,000 members, has a staff of 30, and an annual budget of $8 million. NASP is located in downtown Bethesda, MD, three blocks from the Metro (Red Line). NASP represents school psychology and supports school psychologists to enhance the learning and mental health of all children and youth.
The Manager of Communications and Social Media is responsible for supporting NASP’s communications efforts to promote NASP programs and services and the profession of school psychology through communication, advocacy, social media, and other public outreach activities. Outcomes include: improved recognition and perceived value of NASP and school psychologists among key external stakeholder groups and the public; increased awareness and use of NASP key messages, resources and initiatives among NASP members; greater NASP presence in online and traditional media outlets; greater alignment of NASP communications across communication vehicles (website, e-newsletters, Communiqué, etc.); and advancement of NASP’s mission to foster best practices in education and mental health for children and families. The position reports to and works under the general supervision of the Director of Communications.
E-communications: Assist Director to draft and produce NASP’s weekly e-newsletter, In Brief; help develop and produce targeted e-newsletters or other communications to stakeholder groups; update and draft targeted content for the NASP website; coordinate with membership and marketing team on messages for member outreach.
Social Media: Take primary responsibility for developing and implementing social media efforts across platforms, in coordination with relevant advocacy, membership, and marketing staff.
Website: Support content development, editing, posting and management of materials for website; work with Director and webmaster to streamline and enhance website organization and accessibility.
Press: Assist Director in responding to media requests; develop updated media database; draft and distribute press releases.
Materials development: Coordinate with the Director and other relevant staff to develop and disseminate communication resources on issues such as crisis response, School Psychology Awareness Week, release of major NASP documents and initiatives, and legislative priorities.
PREPaRE Curriculum: Coordinate with the Director and relevant volunteer leaders to develop and disseminate promotional materials to stakeholder groups regarding PREPaRE, NASP’s school crisis prevention and intervention training curriculum; support ongoing communication with PREPaRE trainers; work with convention and marketing staff to promote PREPaRE workshops; help support materials revision process.
Program Support: Coordinate with the Director on annual budget development; support communication activities at the NASP convention and summer conferences; support response to various requests for information and/or project support; provide pre-meeting and onsite support for various committee meetings; other duties as assigned.
Key Relationships: Internal Communications, Webmaster, Advocacy, Membership and Marketing, Production, Communications Committee (volunteer leaders); School Safety and Crisis Response Committee (volunteer leaders); External: Media, partnership organizations, certain print and design vendors.
Requirements Bachelor’s degree required and a communications or marketing emphasis preferred. The successful candidate will have excellent communications skills both verbal and written; strong experience with implementing social media campaigns across platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram); experience with media and stakeholder outreach; project management experience; excellent proofing skills; and demonstrated proficiency with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Experience posting and editing content in a web content management system strongly preferred. Familiarity with InFormz or other bulk email systems and infograph platforms (e.g., Canva) desirable but not required. Work experience in a communications or public relations capacity preferred (2-3 years). Knowledge of education and/or children’s mental health issues helpful but not required. Ability to work well with staff, volunteers, and others. Flexible, creative, friendly, detail-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced team environment.
