Founded in 1919, The New School in New York City is the only university where a world-renowned design school comes together with premier undergraduate and graduate programs and schools to seek out ways to create a more just, more beautiful, and better-designed world. It is the mission of the university's Marketing & Communication (M&C) department to raise visibility for The New School's innovative academic offering and the university's leadership and commitment to addressing pressing global issues and our institutional values, specifically human-centered design, the intersection of social science and design, social justice, environment/sustainability, and technology for social good.
Reporting to the Director of Brand Strategy and Activation within M&C, the Marketing Manager is responsible for elevating the expertise of New School leaders in specific offices and illustrating the university's impact as a community of change-makers. They will devote 50% of their time in support of Information Technology (IT), and 50% focused on other high priority thematic and initiatives, especially environment/sustainability and university Centers and Institutes including the Tishman Environment and Design Center and The Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility.
The role requires someone who is passionate about and experienced in global issues such as sustainability, innovations in technology for social impact, and immigration/migration. They are a strategic and creative thinker and strong writer experienced with a variety of marketing platforms. M&C is a highly collaborative department, so this Marketing Manager is expected to forge productive partnerships and participate in working groups across the university and externally.
RESPONSIBILITIES Serve as the first marketing point of contact for leaders in IT and the Centers. Coordinate M&C's development and execution of strategic and impactful marketing programs and activations that will showcase The New School's unique contributions and effect in these spaces, to both internal and external audiences.
Strategy and Message Development Collaborate with Director, AVP, and leaders in IT and the Centers to define IT and the Centers' marketing and communication strategy, plans, and budgets: ● Coordinate inclusion of IT and the Centers' leadership and initiatives in university-level marketing, and shape how those initiatives are presented in dedicated marketing programs. ● Provide ongoing reports of trends and advances in the relevant thematic areas, including initiatives by peer institutions. Provide recommendations on how to innovate and evolve The New School's relative presence. ● Mine and collect stories of people and projects that define and differentiate The New School's approach. Craft Strategic Briefs which inspire all messaging and creative, by sourcing these RTBs and key messaging points. ● Package information in a way that internal audiences can better understand the IT resources available to them ● Collaborate with leaders in IT and the Centers to build presentations for external audiences that illustrate their key initiatives through the lens of the university's values.
Marketing & Activation Develop an annual plan and implement tactics that promote IT and the Centers' leadership and initiatives: ● Identify opportunities for building awareness across marketing channels including internal communications, media and community relations, marketing materials, stories for New School News, and leadership presentations. ● Lend strategic guidance in development of web content that communicates differentiation vis-a-vis university positioning and priorities, and support in framing messages and talking points in alignment with university goals ● Collaborate with Social Media team to track activities of key influencers in relevant thematic areas and use this knowledge to develop inventive engagement tactics. ● Collaborate with Communications team to coordinate response to media inquiries and to pro-actively connect stories about leaders and thematic initiatives with the news cycle via announcements, media pitches, and op-eds. ● Increase visibility through on and off campus activations. ● Participate as a programmatic partner in external events, conferences and other thematic gatherings to raise visibility for Centers' initiatives and new products developed by IT ● Attend functions, events, programs, seminars, etc. which may occur after business hours or on weekends.
Community and Relationship Building Serve as IT and the Centers' voice to socialize their services and initiatives both within the university and externally: ● Partner with the internal communications team to build faculty, student and staff understanding and advocacy, via tactics including emails, newsletters, and stories for the New School News and the New School Free Press. ● Gather internal feedback on availability and access to information and resources relating to IT ● Manage communication resources like blogs [techtalk.newschool.edu, etc.] ● Engage cultural/industry influencers and our neighbors in Greenwich Village/New York City (e.g. Union Square partnership). ● Monitor mentions of IT and the Centers and direct comments/questions to the appropriate individuals in those areas in a timely manner.
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Advertising, Marketing or related field ● 2 – 3 years work experience in a strategic marketing or communications position ● Excellent verbal and written communication skills ● Baseline understanding of new technology as it relates to educational resources/innovations ●Strong experience in global issues like sustainability, innovations in technology for social impact, and immigration/migration. ● Ability to translate and communicate information in a highly relevant and inspiring way to both student and industry audiences ● Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work well under pressure ● Strong organizational and follow-up skills with attention to detail, timelines and superior service orientation ● Passion and enthusiasm for technology, environment/sustainability and social justice ● Experience with social media marketing and content development ● Proficiency in Photoshop, InDesign, Powerpoint, and Google suite ● Flexibility to attend evening and weekend events
