Teachers College, Columbia University is recruiting for the position of Director at Teachers College Press. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and focusing the current and future publishing program-- new books, reprints, digital products, content management applications, and special projects (annual sales of approximately $7,000,000., 55-65 titles/year plus an active backlist of more than 500 titles).
Teachers College Press is one of the most prominent publishers in the field of education in the nation. An auxiliary department of Teachers College, Columbia University, Teachers College Press has a distinguished history of more than 115 years of publishing scholarly and professional works in all areas of education. The Press’s publishing is concentrated in six main categories within the field: early childhood, foundations, teacher education, language and literacy, administration and leadership, and curriculum.
With experience and expertise in educational publishing, the selected candidate will: deploy budgeted resources to meet or exceed annual sales projections; approve all contracts including author and subsidiary rights agreements, marketing and editorial arrangements with partner organizations, and distribution and fulfillment agreements; and approve all budgets and financial plans. For administrative, budgetary, and policy purposes the Director reports to the VP of Finance and Administration. As an independent university press, editorial decisions are made by the Director in conjunction with TCP staff and the TC Editorial Advisory Board. The Director has a strong concentration in Acquisitions, working directly with certain high profile TC Press authors.
In collaboration with TC Press’s management team, the Director will:
provide leadership in functional operations in production, business, sales and marketing and acquisitions;
manage employee productivity including professional development, accountability, and departmental/team commitment for a staff of 23;
initiate, develop, and provide strategic oversight for new business development including ventures on digital platforms;
enlist business and other consultants to work on list expansion and new initiatives to increase revenue;
work with College faculty and administration to represent the best interests of Teachers College as an independent university press.
Bachelors or higher; 10+ years in publishing (5 years in a leadership position) with a concentration and demonstrated experience in acquisitions/ marketing/finance; strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; knowledge of subject areas a must; ability to spot trends and new directions in both education and publishing.
