Position Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Sr.Public Relations Specialist.
In this role, the successful candidate Title: Senior Media Relations Specialist Department: Marketing & Communications Reports to: Manager of Media Relations Position Summary Reporting to the Manager of Media Relations, the Senior Media Relations Specialist contributes to and supports the development and implementation of strategic public/media relations programs designed to promote key clinical services and to enhance and protect the reputation of the brand and mission of NYU Langone Health as a world-class, patient-centered, integrated academic medical center. The incumbent assists the Manager of Media Relations across the full range of public relations activities relating to the clinical service lines to which he/she is assigned (e.g., GI, urology, mens health, sports medicine, nutrition, neurology, rehabilitation) including researching issues, monitoring media and drafting releases.
As assigned, the incumbent will also develop media outreach strategies and media pitches, help to fulfill incoming media requests for experts, will interact with Medical Center faculty and leadership and will serve as key contact for select media outlets. Time management, critical thinking, ability to work well in a team setting, initiative and flexibility are all important in this role. The incumbent needs to have enthusiasm to succeed as well as a passion for health care and an academic medical center setting. The ability to work quickly, efficiently and have excellent writing, computer and organizational skills are a must.
Assist in the development and implementation of strategic communications activities in support of NYU Langone Healths annual and long-term goals and objectives relating to clinical initiatives (e.g., patient care advances, research, etc.)
Draft press releases, holding statements, talking points, Q&As, etc.
Contribute to the writing and production of NYU Langones Daily Media Report
Identify and pitch topics/experts for news stories that establish NYULMC/NYU School of Medicine as leader
Work closely with the Associate Director and other members of the media relations team to organize and staff interviews/filming on-site as necessary Prepare Medical Center faculty and staff for interviews, including development of talking points, Q&As, and practice interviews
Manage and accompany media on interviews/filming on-site as necessary
Develop and maintain relationships with key local and national press across all channels of media
Triage and handle media calls after normal business hours (on call duties) as necessary
Manage ongoing updates of departmental Communications & Public Affairs website
Support media relations efforts including media list development (key local, national and international health, business and consumer reporters across all channels of media including online and social media), media monitoring, pitching and monthly results reports
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications: To qualify you must have a General o Bachelors degree in journalism, public relations or communications o Minimum of 4-5 years of agency, non-profit or corporate public relations experience, or related work experience o Proven track record of success in public relations Media Relations o Demonstrated knowledge of the local and national public relations landscape required. Healthcare experience a plus. o Ability to identify news worthiness of issues and gauge appropriateness of topics for coverage in specific media outlets o Has existing relationships with key local and national science reporters o Ability to expand and build relationships with reporters strategically important to issues of interest to academic medical centers o Knowledge of various public relations tools and techniques o Experience in handling crisis communications and issues management Personal Skills o Excellent writing and editing skills a must o Creative self-starter; proactive; able to juggle multiple projects and follow through to completion; a problem-solver, deadline oriented o Strong oral and interpersonal communications skills o Ability to develop effective messages aligned with the goals of the organization o Ability to exercise excellent judgment o Professional presence and demeanor
