The Public Affairs Reporting Program at the University of Illinois Springfield is seeking an experienced professional for an Assistant/Associate Professor position based on experience in teaching, scholarship, and service. The person will also serve as the Director of the nationally renowned Public Affairs Reporting Program. This full-time, on-campus, tenure-track position will begin August 16, 2019. UIS tenure-system faculty are expected to be available and engaged in the campus community, with assigned professional responsibilities for teaching, scholarship, and service.
Activities and assignments include, but are not limited to: (1) Responsibility for maintaining a graduate-level emphasis through such activities as teaching graduate-level courses which are components of the required core curriculum in the Public Affairs Reporting Program. Teaching duties consist of teaching PAR courses, course scheduling, course assessment, and conducting field trips to major newspapers, wire services, and broadcast outlets. (2) Providing on-going academic and professional career advising to graduate students in the Public Affairs Reporting Program. (3) Providing oversight of capstone projects and evaluation. The PAR Director is responsible for the Masters Closing Portfolio Exercise. (4) Participating in graduate student recruitment and selection process which involves responding to inquiries regarding the requirements of the Public Affairs Reporting Program and conducting prospective student interviews. (5) Providing administrative direction and leadership to the Public Affairs Reporting Program. Program administration duties include administrative oversight of PAR programming, outreach and community service activities, as well as program fundraising in collaboration with the UIS Office of Advancement, and budget oversight and management of resources. (6) Conducting research and scholarly activities. Scholarship and service activities include attending national and regional conferences, engaging in journalistic scholarship projects, and serving on the Dean’s Cabinet.

Successful candidates must have earned a Master’s degree in Journalism or a related field. A minimum of ten years’ experience in news reporting is required. Background in and familiarity with RTV reporting, writing and editing; multimedia reporting; media law, FOIA and social media is highly preferred. University teaching experience is desirable. Ability to work with diverse cultures in a collaborative and collegial manner in a student-centered environment is expected.
