As a senior communications expert in Harvard University's central public affairs and communications team, the Director of Content Strategy is responsible for developing innovative and effective ways to bring Harvard University content to global audiences. The Director must be a skilled communicator and manager, collaborating with editorial, creative, and media relations teams to build, deploy and refine content strategies to support the goals of the University. The Director of Content Strategy will lead a team within Harvard Public Affairs & Communications (HPAC) that will brainstorm, test, produce, distribute, and measure multi-channel content for digital platforms, including Harvard.edu and associated websites, the Harvard Gazette, email, and evolving social media and mobile platforms.
The ideal candidate will possess a passion for content strategy – from identifying trends to advancing engagement; a high degree of initiative, motivation, flexibility, and self-direction. The Director will be required to collaborate at a high level across HPAC and across the University, and will be responsible for finding ways to improve delivery of content through coordinated and complementary efforts.
Duties and responsibilities:
Partner with the editorial, creative, and media relations teams to brainstorm, test, produce, distribute, and measure multi-channel content for digital platforms owned or affiliated with Harvard Public Affairs & Communications, in alignment with University priorities, branding, and voice
Serve as product owner for key University digital products, including University websites (Harvard.edu, Harvard Gazette), and develop long-term strategies that meet the needs of existing and potential new digital audiences
Manage HPAC staff responsible for analytics/reporting, digital content production and distribution; will also serve as a mentor and advisor for relevant staff across the department and university
Produce content for harvard.edu, the University's flagship social media channels, and related digital properties; establish best practices for user experience, search optimization, taxonomy/nomenclature lists and definitions; and develop content calendar
Manage relationship with web development team to launch new site features that meets the interests and needs of the University's key audiences
Establish best practices for analytics collection and internal distribution, working with Analytics Lead
Play a University-wide role in identifying content, analytics, and social best practices, and disseminating them
While relevant experience is expected, first and foremost, the Director of Content Strategy will bring a collaborative approach to developing consistently high quality deliverables and the ability to embrace the challenges of a fast-paced work environment.

10+ years' work experience in developing and editing interactive content, including web and email
Experience leading, selecting, developing and motivating successful teams.
Strong understanding of HTML, social media, video, podcasting, blogging, email, and content management technologies and general comfort working with new technologies
Fluency in use of web-based collaboration tools
Basic knowledge of image processing and hands-on experience with web-based WYSIWYG editors
Excellent collaboration, problem solving, and organizational skills
Extremely strong attention to detail and sense of language (grammar, tone, voice, etc.)
Excellent communication skills with teams both co-located and remote, ability to manage directly and influence without authority across multi-level teams
Ability to learn new tools and technologies
Ability to juggle multiple projects and work in a deadline-oriented environment

Strong judgment and discretion with confidential materials
Experience working in an online publication, web portal, or journalistic website/platform desirable

BA/BS in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or related discipline
