The Communications Specialist will report directly to the Director of Communications and Marketing to assist in the development, implementation, and promotion of positive communication about Harris-Stowe State University. The Communications Specialist will help gather and disseminate University news to the news media, develop and implement public relations activities to promote the University’s public affairs mission, and assist in coordinating other special projects.
-Serves as a liaison officer between the university and colleges/schools/departments in order to develop a databank of potential news stories
-Write and edit news stories, fact sheets, marketing collateral, and other written communications, including press releases and statements on campus issues and initiatives.
-Pitches stories to news media, prioritizing national, high priority and international media outlets
-Monitors, measures and reports out on media coverage; stays current on news developments
-Maintains media lists
-Ensures that HSSU Identity Standard rules are applied to all HSSU published content
-Review and edits content submitted for document design projects and work with graphic designer to finalize copy prior to document layout
-Responds to internal and external inquiries and feedback
-Develops and maintain content calendar
-Contribute to the communications team’s projects with writing, editing, and design for newsletters, pamphlets, brochures, reports and other publications for internal
and external audiences.
-Bachelor’s Degree or higher in communications, journalism, English or other related field
-Two years of successful related experience in communications/public relations preferred.
-Must be proficient in Microsoft Office productivity tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access)
-Must have strong written and oral communication skills
-Must be able to formally plan and independently manage assigned projects
-Ability to use common office machines (i.e. computers, copiers, calculators, cellular phones/blackberry, etc.)
-Ability to use popular computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet and file maintenance reports

-Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle
-Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body
-Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a signification degree
