The Assistant Director of Graduate Recruitment is an integral team member in The School of Public Affairs (SPA) Office of Graduate Admissions (OGA) at American University (AU). SPA enjoys top rankings and national recognition across its array of master’s degree programs in the fields of Data and Political Science, Political Communication, Public Administration, Public Policy, Justice, Law & Criminology, and Terrorism & Homeland Security Policy. Under the supervision of the Assistant Dean of Graduate Enrollment, SPA seeks an innovative and dynamic team member to lead its graduate recruitment efforts for its seven (7) master’s degree programs. The primary responsibility of the incumbent is the development, implementation, and execution of strategic recruitment and communication plan(s) for SPA’s portfolio of residential master’s degrees. The Strategic Recruitment Plan (SRP) is guided by program-specific enrollment metrics, supported by diverse and entrepreneurial recruitment strategies, and evaluated via survey methodology and data analytics. The assistant director will also be responsible for enhancing the robust and multi-channel communication plans that make full use of the University’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform, Recruit, and is supplemented with other strategic outreach modalities.
The position is responsible for the following with guidance from the assistant dean: web-based, digital, and in-person recruitment activities focused on increasing as well as diversifying the prospect pool at the top of enrollment funnel. Primary activities include SPA’s domestic travel plan, virtual information sessions, on-campus visits and open houses, and recruitment-related special events. In order to operationalize and monitor the aforementioned recruitment activities, the incumbent will direct SPA’s Graduate Student Ambassador (GSA) program; lead evaluation, analysis, and monthly reporting on recruitment activities; evolve and manage OGA’s inquiry and event communication plans; support the design and development of recruitment collateral; maintain inventories of recruitment supplies; lead and/or participate in event planning and execution; and actively engage in other SPA/OGA initiatives as required and assigned.

This position may supervise part-time staff (i.e., consultant(s) employed for recruitment-specific initiatives) and will supervise current, graduate students as part of the Graduate Student Ambassador (GSA) program
Must be able to travel and be away for extended periods; attend functions on- and off-campus and work evening and weekend hours as needed
Good physical condition is requisite to meet recruitment responsibilities with the necessity to regularly lift boxes, recruitment supplies, and luggage weighing in excess of 10 pounds, climb stairs, and walk long distances

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications, public affairs, or related field
A minimum of one (1) year of relevant full-time professional experience (post-degree) in a higher education environment or other relevant experience in a high traffic, customer contact position within a complex organization
Ability to handle a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment; be a proactive self-starter; adapt and operate at a high level of efficiency with moderate direction and supervision
Complete multiple assigned tasks independently and on schedule
Excellent administrative and organizational skills
Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written), with a customer service orientation; effectively interact with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds
Team-oriented with an ability to foster positive and productive working relationships in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner with students (prospective and current), staff, and faculty
As a primary representative of SPA and the University, incumbent must demonstrate impeccable professional decorum at all times
Experience handling sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality
Proficiency in MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and web-based research; comfort level with social media and digital technology; willingness to learn new computer programs
Preferred Education and Experience
Familiarity with Ellucian Recruit CRM or other customer relationship management software
