The Student Art Gallery Manager, under minimal supervision of the Executive Director of Galleries and Collections, manages, develops and executes programming, including the START.dt extension at Wake Downtown (focused on art, science and community connections), and seeks active collaboration with students and their faculty to realize exhibitions of student work in class, project, and solo formats. Under a unified arts umbrella of three units, Collections, the Hanes Gallery, and START, the START manager works closely with the other staff to coordinate programming and offer cross-unit support. The manager supervises work-study students and interns.The manager performs outreach and coordination with University campus, Reynolda House, SECCA, and University Fellows to raise awareness of the mission and programming of the START Gallery.
Working with Executive Director and Art Dept Chair, forms advisory committee of faculty members for planning, policy, and procedure implementation
Liaises with students and/or their faculty to plan and implement exhibition programming.
Communicates with multiple University groups and arts entities, and performs outreach to Reynolda House to raise awareness of the mission and programming of the START Gallery.
Researches information for web design and implementation appropriate for the gallery.
Generates programming that is appealing to the student population and appropriate for gallery: readings, interdisciplinary activities, performances and talks
Develops strategies to engage University students both within and beyond the department.
Develops and implements requisite marketing and public relations activities.
Exercises independent judgment, initiates programming, and creates exhibition schedules for the gallery.
Collaborates with multiple University entities to disseminate information about START's events.
Works autonomously to perform design and installation tasks, and to maintain gallery operations.
Schedules and helps guide interns in their research and supervises Work-Study students
Handles transactions for the START Gallery and for making gallery purchases. (These responsibilities require a credit check for selected applicants.)
Processes purchase requisitions, travel requisitions/reimbursements, invoices, and other documents and paperwork as needed.
Assists in budget development and oversight for the gallery and its programing Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Bachelor's Degree in Art, Art History, Museum Studies, Business, or related fields
Relevant work or internship experience.
Must be a member of the Wake Forest University undergraduate graduating class for the most recent/current academic year.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Knowledge of budget development and fiscal management.
Skill in prioritizing workflow and managing resources.
Detail oriented in planning, organizing, and coordinating activities and special events.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Ability to multi-task and demonstrate sound judgment and discretion.
Proficiency in computer skills and relevant software.
Ability to supervise and train work-study students and/or interns.
Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours as needed.
General knowledge of contemporary art, art history, art exhibitions, and the art marketplace.
Knowledge of security policies and procedures regarding fine arts galleries and exhibitions.
Knowledge of practices and procedures to prepare exhibits for shipping, receiving, storage, preservation, installation, and disassembly.
Supervises work-study students and/or interns, when applicable.
