Responsible primarily for the independent management of a dynamic portfolio of donors. Work with donors to move them through the donor commitment continuum. Identify unique, donor-specific ways to cultivate and engage donors, culminating in Major Gift solicitation. Support both annual and long-term fundraising goals of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Foundation, securing both annual gifts for operations and capital/endowment gifts for new projects.
75% Manage Dynamic Donor Portfolio • Work independently to manage dynamic portfolio of donors within both the Arboretum's Raiser's Edge system and UMF's DMS system. Identify and match donor passions with Arboretum funding needs; develop proposals and written materials in support of specific Arboretum fundraising initiatives. Coordinate Major Gift asks so special gifts are never at the expense of annual support. • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of all Arboretum gardens, programs, horticultural research and capital projects. Use this knowledge to match donor philanthropic goals with institutional needs. Coordinate with internal Arboretum experts as appropriate to identify customized Major Gift opportunities for donors. Involve experts in gift discussions as needed to maximize gift results. • Identify donors who are best candidates for Planned Giving and plan appropriate strategies for long-term engagement. Utilize more complex gift structures (Challenge Gifts, Blended Gifts) to meet donor and institutional needs. • Partner with Prospect Management resources at UMF as needed. Work with UMF and DO's in other units as required to coordinate gifts across units. • Builds and maintains a portfolio of major gift prospects to ensure that timely steps are taken toward solicitation, closure, and stewardship. Performance expectations for this level of gift officer include approximately 10 solicitations per year at $25,000 or more. Total annual gift production expectations for this level of position range from approximately $100,000 to $500,000. • Collaborates with University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) professionals and utilizes UMF centralized resources to achieve and exceed established standards and metrics for the position. • Strive to build portfolio using networks of corporate partners, MLA Foundation trustees, and community connections as well as prospect research. • Develop a strong understanding of the difference between gifts and sponsorships as outlined in U of M policy.
15% Event Management • Working with Donor Relations, plan and execute 5-6 Donor Spotlight events every year. These events are designed as "behind the scenes" looks at the Arboretum intended to both steward existing donors and further develop new donor-level members. As opportunities arise, use as further engagement tool for Major Gift prospects.
10% - Administration • Provide leadership with regular reports on progress and results of the prospect solicitation process and portfolio. Maintain timely and thorough reports of all contacts. Review research reports and all available information from the University Donor Management System database and the MLA Prospect Research System on assigned donors and prospects. • Files timely contact reports, maintains accurate records and provides updated information both the Arboretum's Raiser's Edge system and UMF's DMS. • Work with Development Director to ensure that gifts are utilized in line with donors’ intentions.
Required: • BA/BS degree and two years professional development experience in individual giving, with demonstrated ability to promote and successfully solicit major gifts; or four or more years of experience in marketing, consultative sales, public relations, financial advisement or related field where you were responsible for cultivating/soliciting and maintaining long-term, trusting client relationships (either individual or business) for provision of services. • Demonstrated experience and success in developing long-term relationships with donors, prospects or clients. • Demonstrated communications and interpersonal skills and success in working in a team setting. • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations. • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate to a wide array of audiences. • Proficient in the use of PC software, such as Microsoft Office, and database familiarity.
Preferred Qualifications: • Advanced degree • Experience in a nonprofit, University or public garden setting. • A demonstrated interest and or passion for public gardens, nature, and the environment. • Experience using donor management software. • Experience planning and/or executing events or public exhibits.
