About the Position
You will be responsible for developing multi-modal educational programs and interpretation materials; lead tours and teach workshops; liaison with the community and public schools; train student interns; photograph educational events and provide press materials about them.
This is a part-time (.50 FTE), 11-month/year position.
Develop multi-modal educational programming, curricula, and educational resources (such as worksheets with guided activities) for a broad range of audiences.
This involves identifying how an exhibition can be best presented to visiting groups (e.g. high school art students, families, and senior citizens) and develop educational materials around that concept, including 1-2 worksheets (see attached examples) for 5-6 exhibitions annually.
Develop exhibition interpretation materials, including didactic labels, and other related visitor services in close consultation with exhibition curator.
Usually the exhibition curator provides interpretation materials but the educator would edit the texts and make suggestions to help make them as educational as possible. 5-6 exhibitions annually.
Develop public programs (such as public lectures, workshops, seminars, symposia, and guided activities about temporary exhibitions and events, the Sculpture Collection, and the University portable collections, as well as special activities, performances, film screenings, music concerts, and activities for families and children), identifies and secures speakers, performers, musicians, dancers, etc., and coordinates the events.
Currently the Gallery offers around 40 events annually, developed and coordinated by the Director (HY). The educator will participate in this work and be responsible for at least half of the events.
Lead tours, give public lectures, and teach workshops about the Sculpture Collection, current exhibitions, and the portable collection.
There are 6-10 tours of the sculpture collection annually and a few tours of exhibitions (mostly for university courses). This will hopefully increase but trained interns will be able to take care of the bulk of these.
2-3 workshops are offered annually (e.g. Academy of Lifelong Learning and Grandparents U).
Work with student groups and classes at WWU to facilitate the students’ own creation of educational materials, e.g. for a website on the Sculpture Collection.
This is a new and uncharted territory that depends on the educator’s availability and creativity for development.
Actively promote the Gallery and the Sculpture Collection to schools and organized groups and assist them in planning, coordinating, and managing field trips to campus.
The main contacts are the Bellingham Senior Activity Center and the art teachers of the four high schools in Bellingham who should be contacted for 4-5 exhibitions annually to schedule a visit.
Act as liaison between the Gallery and the community with the goal of establishing a network of productive partnerships with a variety of local groups and promote the use of the Sculpture Collections and exhibitions for life-long educational purposes.
This is an open and uncharted territory and will develop over time. The idea is to invite local groups to tour the gallery and sculpture collection (such as youth and veterans groups, Rotary and Lions groups, etc.).
Train and lead students in hands-on projects in museum education and interpretation.
6 advanced art and art history students intern as a group for 3 consecutive quarters each year. The educator (in half position) would be responsible for 45 hours of the group’s time (training them for instance to give tours) but the interns would work independently on projects part of that time.
PHOTOGRAPHY AND PRESS
Photograph education events and performances and provide photographic files and prints for use by the university.
Photograph the events that the educator is responsible for, possibly 20-30 annually.
Work with CFPA marketing department to develop marketing and public relations strategies for the education program;
2-3 brainstorming meetings annually with the CFPA director of public relations.
Provide press materials about educational events for press releases, the Gallery’s website, social media announcements, and other marketing needs.
Provide a short paragraph about educational events developed by the educator, possibly 20-30 annually.
Master’s degree in Museum Education, Studio Art, Art History (with a concentration in modern and/or contemporary art), Museum Studies, Curatorial Practice, Visual Studies or other relevant field from accredited institution; OR Bachelor’s degree in one of the listed or other relevant fields, and minimum five (5) years of museum experience in an art museum’s curatorial or education department.
Minimum two (2) years of museum experience in an art museum’s curatorial or education department with a measurable level of achievement of institutional goals;
Wide knowledge about current practice and theory of contemporary art and art museums with special attention to museum education pedagogy and practice.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
High level of interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate with a wide range of constituencies.
Ability to interact in a professional manner with school and district administration.
• Strong planning, project management, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
$19,530- $21,700 depending on experience and qualifications
