Posting Summary: The UVA School of Engineering & Applied Science seeks dynamic, experienced communications professionals to join a growing team working collaboratively to raise our school's international profile. This is an excellent opportunity to help UVA Engineering showcase its leadership in bold research and world-class education. Reporting to the UVA Engineering director of communications, the communications managers will have dotted-line responsibility to the leaders of various interdisciplinary research initiatives and academic departments to execute communications tasks that will assist in publicizing work, accomplishments and impact. The communications managers also may collaborate with leaders of other departments, programs or interdisciplinary research initiatives when needs arise.
The communications managers will provide valuable support for a full range of communications tasks, including: writing and editing positive stories and press releases about faculty, staff and students; working with the director of communications and unit leaders to develop comprehensive communications plans; implementing and measuring the effectiveness of the tasks and activities in the plans; offering communications advice based on best practices and University media/communications procedures; writing, editing and designing or supervising design for a wide variety of print, video, Web and other electronic communications/marketing materials within the University's brand standards (e.g. print and digital newsletters, brochures and postcards); managing web site and social media content; creating talking points, speeches and presentations; maintaining mailing/contact lists; scheduling photographers and videographers and taking some photos; working within communications budgets; and staying current on communications skills and best practices.
A Bachelor's degree in communications or related field and at least three years' experience in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field is required. Required experience includes: newswriting; working knowledge of communications, marketing or related fields; superb verbal and written communication skills; ability to take initiative and bring multiple complex projects to completion in a decentralized environment with attention to quality; and ability to interact professionally and proactively with all levels of personnel and leadership. Applicants also should have familiarity with web and print design software. Event planning experience is a plus.
