The Childcare Quality and Early Learning Center for Research and Training (CQEL) is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and provides training and research on the quality of child care and early learning in Washington State. Currently, CQEL is involved in the Washington State QRIS initiative, Early Achievers. CQEL disseminates products centered on effective practices in early learning and care programs. These products include: teacher training webcasts and materials; teacher training suites; videos of exemplary practices; as well as other materials for professional development of Child Care Aware (CCA) and Early Childhood Education Assistance Program (ECEAP) staff. The development of CQEL products is a joint effort across multiple teams and locations.
EarlyEdU Alliance within the College of Education is a higher education collaborative for Head Start and Early Childhood Teaching. The EarlyEdU Alliance brings together higher education, government, and non-profit stakeholders to strengthen the nation's early care and education workforce by increasing access to higher-education programs preparing these professionals. We work together to improve child outcomes by transforming early childhood teacher development. The EarlyEdU Alliance offers a set of competency-based courses in early childhood education, delivered in conjunction with students' field-based learning. These courses were developed by national experts led by faculty at the University of Washington.
CQEL and Early EdU have an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Communications Specialist.
The Communications Specialist will independently research and produce content and design a variety of communications, to include printed publications, social media and web content. This position will be independently responsible for the development and implementation of CQEL's communication goals which target a diverse array of audiences including the Department of Early Learning, Higher Education Community, donors, Institutional Partners, and Faculty and Staff. This position will also integrate CQEL and UW's brand identity and voice, and convey CQEL's key messages quickly, accurately and strategically.
Position Complexities: The Communications Specialist requires thorough attention to detail, thoughtful research, and the ability to independently develop content and compose material that communicates CQEL's and Early EdU's programs, accomplishments, and point of view. The person selected must be able to make independent decisions and work strategically with regard to the designing, writing, editing, and producing content using a variety of communication tools, including printed publications, social media and web content, while also integrating Center messages, brand identity, and voice. This position must serve as the lead subject matter expert in overall communication strategy and produce content that addresses a diverse range of audiences.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Communication & Information Management 70%
Working with all CQEL and Early EdU units, create an integrated outreach strategy that reflects Center wide project and priorities.
Responsible for the creation and production of all written and online communications for all Center units.
Identify key audiences and messages, understand all existing and new programs within the Center, and create consistent messaging in alignment with brand strategy.
Research and recommend opportunities and events for presenting and promoting, and independently create and produce newsletters and related content.
Build relationships with the CQEL unit's staff and faculty to articulate and promote their centers and achievements.
Conduct focus group sessions to evaluate web design and communication and product effectiveness.
Manage dissemination to all CQEL and Early EdU audiences. Regularly evaluate printed and online forms, websites, applications, and marketing materials and as needed, redesign and enhance to assure cohesive and central design themes.
Coordinate efforts with the Center shared services units including Design, Media and Content development teams.
Liaison with College of Education marketing and communication unit.
Create fresh website content including homepage stories, general information, news, and photos.
Evaluate all current web content for rewrites and edits.
Collaborate with the PI, Directors, and staff to write and publish news stories and profiles featuring the work of faculty and the center.
Track impact efforts to use data to measure our impact and influence.
Develop strategic and integrated social media strategies for individual projects and products, and the organization as a whole.
Build an engaged cadre of social media followers and friends on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn to enhance communication and sense of community.
Develop and execute both short and long term outreach plans, manage timelines and ensure consistency in branding and voice across the Center.
Management of internal departmental communications 30%
Provide resources and lead staff regarding content for websites, printed materials, university resources, and department standards.
Design and deliver communication materials via print and web for internal communication, external reporting, alliance members, stakeholders, funders and community partners.
Develop communications for the PI and Directors including Power Point presentations, letters, announcements and other as needed.
Work on other projects as assigned.
Bachelor's Degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Marketing, Business or related field, and 2 years of experience in Communications and Information dissemination, writing and/or web development or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in communications, media, and web content development.
Demonstrated interest in higher education and specifically Business School education
High comfort level interacting with faculty, community members and students.
