Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, journalism or related field. Five years professional experience in journalism, broadcasting, public relations, communications or experience in a related field. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:
Provide a public presence for the university through written and oral communications, marketing, and branding efforts. Collaborate with Marketing and Communications team members, University Advancement, the Office of the President as well as other areas on campus to enhance the university's visibility through media channels as well as web, print, and multimedia communications.
Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):
Responsible for writing content and shaping narrative for all such mediums, including, but not limited to print publications such as the university magazine. Serve as the university's liaison for campus public affairs and media relations and represent the university as the Public Information Officer (PIO) managing the development and implementation of the Sam Houston State University (SHSU) crisis communication strategy. Help set and execute the communications strategies in alignment with the SHSU goals, advancing the university's priorities while ensuring alignment with the vision, mission, and key messages. Execute internal and external tactics such as managing publications and intranet content to align and adapt content messaging as appropriate. Develop and lead communication strategies and implementation plans. Interact with key stakeholders (meetings, one-on-ones, organizational "listening") to be proactive in counseling on communication needs as well as identifying appropriate content for university usage. Continuously improve SHSU communication processes and identify critical communication opportunities. Develop, lead, and direct communication programs and plans. Coordinate and support internal communication efforts to enhance practices for information, dissemination, organizational management, and cultural development. Write and produce press releases and feature stories. Contribute to web layout and content. Actively participate in the development of crisis communication strategies and plans through participation in university crisis management. Serve on various committees, on and off campus, as needed. Perform other related duties as assigned such as, but not limited to photography and office administration tasks.
