Institutional Solutions Institutional Solutions is an internal consulting team that evaluates complex cross-functional challenges and develops solutions that address the needs of the overall institution. Institutional Solutions takes on a wide range of high priority initiatives and works collaboratively with senior management and the CEO to establish ways for Pew to work faster, smarter, and more effectively. Institutional Solutions applies a broad range of analytical tools and metrics all based on a pragmatic, results-focused approach to the business. The staff facilitate the development of Pew's mid-year and year-end Institutional Work Plan, helping to identify mission critical initiatives and priorities for senior management and the board. Institutional Solutions also directs the annual planning process for the organization's seven operating departments.
Position Overview Reporting to the Senior Director, Institutional Solutions, the Senior Officer will recommend solutions for a variety of complex challenges in several areas. First, the Senior Officer will work to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Pew's processes, operating model, organizational structure, and functions. Secondly, the Senior Officer will play a lead role in managing the annual operations planning process, including working with Pew's seven Senior Vice Presidents to develop individual department plans. Finally, the Senior Officer will also direct and lead the team in one-time special strategic initiatives such as the analysis of Pew's operating model or the strategic re-alignment of resources and functions. As a key member of the team, the senior officer will be responsible for end-to-end management of projects, including design, management, and execution. The position is client facing and will require extensive collaboration with a wide range of internal and sometimes external stakeholders to achieve results. The Washington, DC-based position will require the Senior Officer to maintain expertise in operational best practices and to develop in-depth knowledge of Pew's program work and its operating functions.
Evaluate and recommend ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operating processes and procedures for Pew's seven operating functions—finance, legal, administration, government relations, philanthropic partnerships, communications, and information technology.
Ensure that analysis and evaluation of problems is thorough, fact-based, and results oriented. Recommend solutions that are timely, practical, and actionable.
Lead and manage all stages of internal consulting projects: problem definition; approach; scope; deliverables; workplan; summary findings and actionable recommendations; and presentation to senior leadership. Facilitate implementation across departments.
Develop and maintain a broad and deep knowledge of Pew's operating policies and procedures as well as 'best practices' in operations.
Develop and manage solid and thoughtful professional relationships with operations and program staff to better understand the work and needs of the institution and to establish collaborative and effective working relationships.
Build close working relationships with other members of Institutional Solutions team.
Lead cross-functional working groups that adopt a practical, problem-solving approach to projects.
Bachelor's degree with relevant business experience required. MBA preferred.
Minimum of 10 years professional experience working for a nonprofit or for-profit organization and directing one or more operating functions.
Experience and expertise in applying quantitative and qualitative techniques to inform decision making and strategy. Demonstrated capabilities for creative problem solving and analysis. Ability to think strategically.
Annual planning experience.
Excellent presentation and meeting management skills.
Demonstrated project management skills. Collaborative work style and proven ability to work with diverse stakeholders, including senior management and CEO. Sound judgement and discretion in handling sensitive or confidential matters.
Some consulting experience preferred.
High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. Microsoft Project experience helpful.
Teambuilding skills essential.
Travel Occasional day travel to Philadelphia (once or twice a quarter) and to one to two national conferences expected.
