The Director of the Office of Communications for Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) leads the office in developing integrated communications strategies and compelling content, and promulgating these across all media and among all constituencies to advance DAR programs, most especially the $5 billion Rising to the Challenge campaign. He/she collaborates throughout the DAR organization to realize the full philanthropic potential of our constituencies, high-impact volunteer support, and deep alumni engagement. Further, the Director works with non-DAR communications colleagues across the enterprise to provide accurate campaign information and messaging, and production, database, and other expertise as needed. Managing a team of eight, the Director is responsible for guiding their beat, editorial, production, and dissemination capabilities, creating effective case statements, advertising, video projects, event content and scripting, web and digital communications, and coordination of development-related press releases.
Campaign Communications Planning and Management
Plan and execute an integrated communications program that advances the strategic goals of DAR programs, complements enterprise-wide Johns Hopkins communications strategies, and reflects the mission, values, and strategic objectives of the campaign and the university.
Develop and implement an integrated development communications plan, employing integrated themes, strategies, and tactics. Create a communications calendar to support project planning and coordination, and an editorial calendar to evaluate and prioritize stories and coordinate communications across all appropriate channels.
Manage a client-focused communications team that collaborates closely with DAR offices across the enterprise to understand their campaign strategies and communications opportunities and challenges; understand, appreciate, and interact effectively with their donors, volunteer leaders, patients, faculty, clinicians, students, and leadership; and provide guidance and assistance. Serve as communications liaison with the University and Medicine offices of communications and the President's Office.
Oversee and monitor the expenditures of the Office of Communications budget, and guide and monitor the financial operations of the team's support staff to ensure timely payment of external vendors.
Oversee the selection and management of internal and external design, writing, editing, graphics, and production, in a range of media from traditional to state-of-the-art digital and film media.
Identify and utilize appropriate metrics to measure and track success of communications programs, making changes and redirecting strategies as needed.
Manage and motivate a skilled and experienced communications staff consisting of five professionals and three support staff. Ensure a culture where effective teamwork, collaboration, creativity, and innovation are expected, recognized, and rewarded. Lead by example with regard to appropriate risk-taking, cross-organizational cooperation, and clear standards of conduct. Develop a long-term resource plan to ensure adequate staffing throughout the campaign and beyond.
Communications Research and Evaluation
Design and implement communications research and evaluation, proactively and in response to campaign and program strategies and priorities.
Embed into the communications program the data learned through research and evaluation, and develop plans that respond to research findings and changing trends.
Remain current on trends and innovations in advancement, as well as the communications strategies and best practices of other nonprofits.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Master's degree in communication, marketing, or related field. Minimum of eight years relevant experience required. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Related Work Experience:
Relevant experience includes higher education, corporate, government or not-for-profit communications, marketing, external or public affairs, advancement or the equivalent. Management experience, preferably in a large, complex organization, and preferably of a high-performing communications staff. Comprehensive campaign experience preferred. Demonstrated ability to synthesize the requirements of multiple internal partners into cohesive and compelling communications, both in terms of creative impact and key messages. Experience managing external creative agencies and resources preferred. Prefer experience that enhances management skills across a complex organization, and in environments of ambiguity.
