Western Carolina University’s Department of Political Science and Public Affairs invites applicants for Director of the Local Government Training Program (LGTP) and Assistant Director of the Public Policy Institute (PPI). The successful candidate will assume primary responsibility for the 32 year old Local Government Training Program. A unique partnership with the University of North Carolina’s School of Government which addresses the training needs of public officials and personnel in the 26 westernmost counties of North Carolina. In addition, the successful candidate will spend approximately one-fifth of his/her time as Assistant Director of the Public Policy Institute, the university’s primary applied research and outreach arm for issues related to Public Policy. The ideal applicant will demonstrate expertise in event/conference organization and planning, working with appointed and elected officials, managing budgets, and working with advisory boards. In addition, applicants should be committed to furthering Western Carolina University’s mission.
The LGTP Director/PPI Assistant Director will hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years of experience in the field OR an MPA with no experience in the field.
A Masters degree in Public Affairs, Public Administration or a related field, experience in planning and executing professional events and conferences, experience with public budgeting processes, experience working with and mentoring graduate/undergraduate students, knowledge of emerging issues in Western North Carolina governance.
