The Head of Science Library is responsible for the overall direction and management of the Science Library. As part of the Public Services Department, the Head of Science Library serves as a team member in providing strategic direction for the Libraries. The incumbent oversees the design and implementation of innovative, user-centered research support services for faculty, students and staff in the sciences. S/he works creatively and collaboratively to build partnerships within the Libraries, with teaching faculty, and across campus in support of the teaching and research mission of the University.
This position is within the Binghamton University Libraries, which include the Glenn G. Bartle and Science Libraries, the Library Annex@Conklin, and the University Downtown Center Library and Information Commons in the College of Community and Public Affairs. The Science Library houses materials in the fields of science, engineering, nursing, and psychology. It features an Information Commons with 50 computers. Staffing includes science librarians, professional and clerical positions and student assistants. This position reports to Associate University Librarian for Public Services and Collections, with the Dean of Libraries as a second-line supervisor. This position will also work directly with the Director of Collections Development on collections duties and responsibilities.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Manages all aspects of the Science Library, including staffing, collections and facilities. Sets priorities and leads strategic planning, policy formation, and resource allocation for the Science Library. Directs the development and implementation of new programs and services for science disciplines; and ensures ongoing assessment of existing programs and services. Leads a dedicated team of Science Library faculty librarians, professional and support staff to provide high-quality, user-centered services. Hires Science Library staff; and identifies staff training and professional development needs. Serves as administrative supervisor for science librarian faculty. Serves as subject liaison with one or more science disciplines; liaison duties include library instruction, outreach and collection development for assigned disciplines. Manages general science and science reference collections.
Serves as advocate for the Science library; builds partnerships with faculty, university administration, and other campus units to promote the Science Library. Represent the Science Library to appropriate campus units and University offices and participate in professional activities and committee assignments within the Libraries and on campus. Represent the Libraries through participation in local, regional, and national cooperative, outreach, and professional activities Maintain a current knowledge of the scientific research trends, emerging technologies, and branch library management in academic libraries.

Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution
At least 3 years of managerial and supervisory experience
Academic course work and/or work experience in science disciplines
Experience in or knowledge of collection management issues
Demonstrated leadership in developing library research services and resources
Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing environments and priorities
Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with faculty and staff
Strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills
Strong commitment to service and professional development
Demonstrated ability to meet requirements necessary for achieving tenure
Managerial and supervisory experience in an academic research library
Experience as a head of a library department or branch library
Academic degree in STEM discipline(s)
In-depth knowledge of or experience with research tools in the sciences; experience in reference and instruction in science disciplines
