The Associate Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of foundations and corporations whose charitable objectives are consistent with those of the teaching, research, and clinical programs of Washington University School of Medicine. The associate director also interprets and describes in lay language the medical and scientific research programs of the School for proposals to individual donors and for Alumni and Development colleagues.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conceive, initiate, and manage corporate and foundation gift programs for School-wide, departmental and program priorities, and work cooperatively with other staff members in Alumni and Development Programs.
Develop compelling proposals to corporate and foundation donor prospects at the $100,000-level and above, advising and partnering with executive leadership, faculty, and volunteers to craft and execute specific, strategic solicitations .Identify, cultivate, solicit, steward, and manage a portfolio of private foundations and corporations to expand the medical school’s base of private support. Proactively match the interests of corporate and foundation donors with faculty research programs, maintaining an active relationship with Medical Public Affairs to stay abreast of faculty activity. Develop and implement innovative plans for enhancing stewardship of foundation and corporate donors.
Establish and maintain strong and effective relationships with the School’s major internal constituencies, which include the Executive Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs, Dean of the School of Medicine, and President of the Washington University Medical Center and members of his Executive Staff, department chairs (19) and their division chiefs, section heads, full-time faculty, and members of other key academic, research, clinical, and administrative units.
Direct and manage, from conception to delivery, the development of high-end and highly individualized materials for the solicitation and stewardship of principal gift donors and prospects, including family foundations, consulting with Medical Public Affairs to design and write materials.
Assist senior administrators and faculty in the identification and prioritization of School and departmental funding needs and opportunities, provide consulting services on development issues, and remain abreast of priorities and programs. Serve as a primary resource of information about the School of Medicine and coordinate major interactions and communications between the School’s internal constituencies and the University’s central development office.

- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university is required.
- A minimum of three years of experience in a higher education or biomedical research setting is required.
- A proven record of success in proposal development is required.
- The candidate should also possess creative skills that facilitate success in an environment where critical thinking and teamwork required.
- Experience in collaborative project management, setting and reaching goals, gathering and organizing information, and an ability to balance multiple priorities are required.
- Superior organizational skills.
- Candidates should have exceptional persuasive writing and verbal communication skills, especially in the conversion of scientific and academic writing to lay language, and the ability to articulate the needs, interests, and accomplishments of the School of Medicine to a wide range of audiences are required.
- Candidates must project a high degree of intelligence, energy and imagination and have an outstanding work ethic and personal enthusiasm for the objectives of Washington University and the School of Medicine.
- The ideal candidate will understand the principles of and current trends in corporate and foundation philanthropy.
- An understanding of the complex environment of a distinguished private research university is desirable.
- Candidates should be flexible, able to adapt to changing circumstances and take advantage of unique opportunities as they occur.
- A doctoral degree in the biomedical sciences is preferred.
- Experience in a medical school or health sciences environment is desirable.
The hiring range for this position is $57,311 to $65,000 annually.

This position is full-time and works approximately 37.5 hours per week.
