University Communications and Public Affairs (UCPA) is an award-winning, full-service division dedicated to increasing awareness and spreading the word about UC San Diego's impact and mission. Department staff work with campus departments to convey the amazing things UC San Diego students, faculty, staff and alumni are doing and help campus departments implement strategies to reach their audience through events, media relations, printed materials, websites and numerous other avenues. Division reports to the Assistant Chancellor / Chief of Staff within the Chancellor's Office VC Area.
Reporting to the Executive Director of University Communications and working in close consultation with the Assistant Chancellor/ Chief of Staff and Administration, the Senior Director of Executive Communications develops a wide range of strategic communications on behalf of the Chancellor and to broadly communicate the Chancellor's vision and initiatives to advance UC San Diego. Provides high-level counsel to the Assistant Chancellor and Chief of Staff, the Assistant Chancellor, and Executive Director regarding all aspects of the Chancellor's leadership and overall campus priorities.
Adds to the informed perspective of the Chancellor and the senior administration; Manages responses to high-profile and sensitive issues; Represents the Chancellor's perspective in a wide range of campus gatherings and meetings; And serves as a liaison to internal and external constituencies. Researches, writes, edits, and catalogues remarks, and prepares speeches and presentations that will be delivered by the Chancellor and other leadership as needed to internal and external audiences. Prepares and manages Chancellor's web page and social media communications.
Develops and/or approves all communications signed by or attributed to the Chancellor—from campus notices and correspondence to quotes and social media entries. Collects and analyzes information, exercises sound political judgment and applies institutional knowledge to initiate and respond to Chancellor correspondence. In collaboration with executives and colleagues across campus, works closely with the Chancellor's Office, senior leaders and university communications staff to research a broad range of topics as background for speeches and other presentations. Assists other senior UC San Diego administrators and managers in a variety of academic and administrative units across the campus. In addition actively manages Chancellor communications through various social media avenues including podcasts, blogs, emails, twitter, video or other efforts as needed.
Assists with the determination of topics, themes and messages that will appropriately reflect UC San Diego's institutional character, accomplishments and goals. Develops and implements, as appropriate, communication strategies, creates and coordinates internal communications efforts, and develops a system to catalogue information on UC San Diego's initiatives, statistics, and opportunities. Ensures that Chancellor's communications foster two-way communications between the administration and employees and ensures that the UC San Diego community and other target audiences are fully informed about major campus activities, including long-range planning and strategic initiatives.
The Senior Director of Executive Communications is a member of the UC San Diego Sensitive Issues Team, serves as a member of the Emergency Operations Council and is responsible for expediting responses to public inquiries on sensitive issues. As a member of this team, takes lead on assisting Chancellor and Assistant Chancellor/Chief of Staff in developing talking points and written statements involving issues management in the areas of campus climate, Regent meetings and other important senior-level issues. Serves as a member of the Editorial Board for University Communications.
