Cal Poly is seeking a career counselor to join our dynamic team at Career Services to support students through all stages of their career development, including exploration and planning.
We are seeking a career counselor to serve on our Freshman Focus Team (FFT). The FFT is comprised of three professional career counselors who support first-year students through individual appointments, group sessions, presentations, outreach activities and collaborations with various campus entities. FFT career counselors help first-year students discover their values, interests and strengths; resolve uncertainties about their choice of major; discover career possibilities; and jumpstart career planning.
The manager for this position believes in providing employees the appropriate levels of challenge and support to foster their success. She values open and frequent communication with staff and provides ongoing feedback to allow for continuous growth and development.
This position is part of the 9-member career counseling team within Career Services, comprised of three Freshman Focus Team counselors and six College Specialist Team counselors. Career counselors work both collaboratively and independently to serve their designated student populations as well as the entire student body. The team continually strives to enhance our services in order to best serve students' diverse and unique needs. Our career counselors stay current with the latest trends and information in our field, and work diligently to keep our programs and services cutting edge. The career counseling team collaborates frequently with other teams and personnel within Career Services including Employer Relations, Administrative and Technical Support, and Marketing/Graphic Design.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; OR a Master's degree and one year of experience.
Licenses, Certificates, Credentials:
Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one by date of hire.
Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters.
General knowledge of career or academic counseling and advising.
Ability to successfully interact with a diverse student population and to assess student needs.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to speak and present information to both small and large groups of people. Able to revise written material used for promotions, presentations, workshops, and marketing.
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
Excellent ability to exercise confidentiality, discretion and to handle highly sensitive interpersonal issues.
Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
Ability to model true professionalism in every aspect of public relations required for the position.
Knowledge and application of word processing, presentation, desktop publishing, spreadsheets and web research/utilization.
Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Working knowledge of, or the ability to quickly learn the university infrastructure, policies and procedures.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with deans, department heads, faculty, staff, students and student organizations. Able to work effectively in teams.
General knowledge of methods and problems of organizational and program management.
Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate employment and career-related data.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
Knowledge of university recruitment, outreach, industry trends, major-specific market information, and employment resources.
Experience in higher education.
Experience with PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date. Employment of retired CalPERS members will typically be for 90 days or less and must be for work requiring specialized skills or for a bona fide emergency to prevent stoppage of business.
Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
