Who is ICIRR? The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights is a mission driven social justice Non for Profit organization for and of the immigrant communities of Illinois. ICIRR is a 30 plus year-old membership organization composed of more than 138 dues paying organizations, the largest immigrant coalition in Illinois. Membership is broad based and includes: community-organizing groups, ethnic associations, unions, refugee organizations, churches and mosques, and direct service organizations that work with diverse immigrant communities.
ICIRR’s mission is to promote the full and equal participation of immigrants and refugees in the political, civic and economic life of our diverse society. In partnership with our member organizations, ICIRR educates and organizes immigrant and refugee communities to assert their rights; promotes citizenship and civic participation; monitors, analyzes, and advocates on immigrant-related issues; and, informs the general public about the contributions of immigrants and refugees. Position’s Scope: The Communications Director is a member of the management staff. This “hands-on” position will be responsible for the overall communications strategy and its implementation. The Communications Director will work collaboratively with all departments overseeing the external relations strategy under the direction of the Deputy Director and will work closely with the CEO.
Essential Job Responsibilities are as follows:
Develops Communication Strategy for ICIRR:
Develop and implement comprehensive strategic media plans for the organization.
Drive a strategy to increase the profile of the organization, and build the internal systems to communicate effectively with key stakeholders.
Work with staff and leaders to form effective messages around Coalition campaigns: Federal immigration reform, protection of civil rights and civil liberties, and local campaigns targeting political, mainstream, and ethnic communities.
Working with development to assist with the messaging around special events, appeals and other fundraising activities.
Strategize and supervise social media content and implementation.
Develop bilingual public information materials for media including press advisories, press releases, and statements.
Supervise design, production and content of campaign materials, print, radio and TV ads in different languages.
Develop and implement comprehensive print and electronic media outreach campaign to promote immigrant rights.
Work with assigned staff in developing public information materials for the media and Coalition members. These materials include profiles of immigrants and refugees, op-ed pieces, fact sheets media advisories and press releases.
Direct the writing, editing and production of various publications, including annual reports, newsletters, research papers, and transcripts of events and round tables.
Leads Media relations:
Act as spokesperson for the organization for press briefings and media interviews.
Responsible for paid and earned media, coordination of press conferences, press briefings and editorial board meetings.
Pitch stories to national, local, mainstream and ethnic media outlets.
Coordinate media efforts with staff, leaders, board members and coalition partners locally and nationally.
Cultivate relationships with mainstream, ethnic and social media with the objective of expanding coverage of immigration and immigrant issues. Maintain and expand roster of press contacts.
Provide training and support to member organizations with the objective of implementing coordinated, pro-active media strategies. Coordinate and conduct basic media and spokesperson training for leaders and allies around immigration reform and civil rights messages.
Develop and maintain relationships with journalism schools and programs to recruit students for communications internships
A minimum of five years’ experience in in public relations, media and/or community outreach.
Excellent verbal, writing, analytical, listening and collaborative skills.
Superb communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
Knowledge and contacts with national, local, mainstream and ethnic media, a plus.
Ability to support colleagues and provide/receive constructive feedback.
Passion and commitment to ICIRR’s mission, vision and strategic direction; commitment to refugee and immigrant communities.
The ability to articulate the vision and mission of the organization, rights, empowerment and power of the immigrant community.
Knowledge of immigration policy and issues a plus
Bilingual English/Spanish language capabilities preferred
Salary: Commensurate with experience
