Performs a variety of professional and scientific activities in determining the relevant, accurate and timely diagnoses of veterinary and zoonotic diseases. Performs customer service, satisfaction and revenue generation oversight. Directs the daily operations of Clemson Veterinary Diagnostic Center (CVDC) and manages section heads. Performs strategic planning for CVDC. Performs other duties as assigned.
1. Examinations and Evaluations: Performs necropsy examinations and complex histopathological evaluations of tissues and specimens derived from all species of livestock, including poultry, domestic and wild animals. Requests and interprets results of laboratory diagnostic tests. Assimilates information from various sources to derive diagnoses. Prepares reports of results, diagnoses, and recommendations that are delivered in a timely manner through the LIMS E/50% 2. Management: Perform administrative duties and management as required for efficient operation of CVDC, including budget, personnel needs and evaluation, supplies and equipment needs, and procurement. Works to increase revenue streams through services. Conducts and collaborates on projects to enhance the economic viability of the lab. Serve as lead contact with accrediting body on matters of accreditation E/30% 3. Quality Control: Ensure operation of an effective Quality System at CVDC in coordination with the Quality Manager. E/10% 4. Collaboration and Personal Development: Communicates with all clients and other memebers of the public relative to diseases affecting animals and zoonotic diseases. Participates in organizations, committees, seminars and conferences. Studies relevant literature to maintain current knowledge of emerging and infectious diseases, diagnostic methodologies and new technologies. E/10%
Applicants must possess a DVM or equivalent degree from a AVMA accredited veterinary college, or through the AVMA Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates; have minimum of 3 years experience in diagnostic veterinary medicine; and board eligible in Anatomic Pathology by ACVP. Board certification in anatomic pathology by ACVP; administrative experience as Section Head, Assistant Lab Director or Lab Director; and possessing Masters and/or Doctoral degrees in relevant academic areas are preferred qualifications
This job requires a high degree of training in the specialty field of veterinary pathology that can be gained by residency pathology programs, veterinary college education and practice experience. The employee should be proficient in performing post mortem examinations of livestock, evaluating tissues histologically, and assimilating data and ancillary information to derive relevant and accurate diagnoses. The employee should be able to propose, plan, and execute funded research regularly. Verbal and written communication skills must be excellent.
The employee works in a laboratory operating under BSL-2 guidelines including requiring personal protective wear, in an environment that contains infectious agents. Minor lifting and physical dexterity with necropsy equipment is required. Occasional travel overnight to attend training and meetings is also required. Subject to emergency duty as requested by State Vet.
