The Philadelphia School (TPS), a progressive pre-8 day school with 476 students and 115 employees, seeks a Director of Communications and Marketing. The school has long enjoyed a strong position in preschool-8 education in the city. The Director of Communications and Marketing will help TPS solidify this position by enhancing the branding and marketing strategy as the school approaches it’s 50th anniversary in 2022.
Using a mission and value-aligned approach, this position will lead the strategy and execution of a comprehensive communication plan for The Philadelphia School and communicate the distinctive position of the TPS brand to internal and external audiences. The Director of Communications is responsible for the strategy, content, and consistency of all communications.
The Director of Communications and Marketing is responsible for a comprehensive and strategic communications and marketing program, including print and digital communications. The Director creates press releases, advertising, publications, and oversees the school’s website and social media. This collaborative position reports to the Director of Institutional Advancement and will work closely with the Head of School, the Board of Trustees, the Directors of Admissions, and the Director of Development and Program Team to implement a broad, comprehensive, and strategic internal marketing and branding plan designed to promote programmatic clarity, admissions, retention, community cohesion, and fundraising.
Develops an annual innovative and comprehensive communications and marketing plan that aligns with the strategic plan with proposed timelines, costs, and measurements to ensure effectiveness, sound fiscal management and engagement
Executes creative, proactive strategies to promote the school’s vision and (mission) through all media: electronic, publications, events, to build awareness of and engagement with TPS
Leads through example, vision, and accountability with a focus on: internal communications; student recruitment materials; managing the school’s branding and style guide; website and social media; electronic communication content and distribution; photography; image archive storage and retrieval; media content and media relations; news identification across all divisions of the school; and news dissemination.
Leads overall brand identity strategy (collaborating with Admissions and Institutional Advancement) for the school and manages the style guide
Directs market research activities to keep abreast of changing demographics and other relevant issues in order to evaluate marketing/communication activities and emerging issues
Develops and maintains strong, working relationships with TPS colleagues
Directs and contributes to the writing, editing, and design of all communication and marketing materials; oversee production from draft creation, proofing, and distribution of final product
Supports the school and maintains a positive visible presence at TPS and community events.
Serves as a member of the school’s crisis management team and helps maintain the written crisis management plan.
Forges close and positive relationships with the local community and advises others on areas of concern or partnership requiring institutional attention and response.
Develops a media and public relations plan. Identifies beneficial media and public relations contacts and proactively cultivates relationships that can be mutually beneficial. Serves as the school’s primary media contact.
Communicates regularly with senior leadership on issues of importance and concern related to communications and public affairs and seeks their input as appropriate.
Collaborate with board committees to disseminate information

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization, preferably in English, journalism, communications, or marketing and a minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience
Demonstrated writing and editing skills; writing samples and a portfolio of work will be requested
Experience working on a collaborative team
Work on a capital campaign within an educational institution
Experience in electronic media opportunities
Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
Exemplary interpersonal and presentation skills, with an ability to build relationships or communicate effectively with internal and external “clients” and constituents.
Demonstrated success in hiring, mentoring, and developing a professional staff; creating a staff culture of proactivity, engagement and consistent follow-up.
Knowledge of public information and community relations methodologies
Ability to handle conflict and resolve problems efficiently and effectively; provide counsel to school leaders to handle, mitigate or diffuse crisis situations.
A strong overall business acumen and sound leadership and strategic planning skills, supplemented by an ability to act consultatively and collaboratively with peers in the other areas of the school or volunteer communities.
