Education: a bachelor's degree, preferably with a major in communication, public relations or business.
Knowledge and skills required: Proven self-motivation, ability to develop and execute strategic plans without daily supervision, strong time management skills, willingness to implement new ideas/methods to alumni chapter program and student outreach; excellent written and oral communication skills, including some experience in public speaking; ability to establish, maintain, and model effective professional relationships with alumni, students, and campus representatives; experience in problem solving and motivating others; expertise in Microsoft Office products and internet technologies; experience with event planning and/or conference coordination; a valid driver's license, willingness to work evenings and weekends, ability to travel independently both in and out of state; strong organizational skills, ability to focus on multiple small details as well as big picture strategy; creativity, continual energy, flexibility, and ability to deal with multiple projects simultaneously; ability to represent the Alumni Association and Appalachian State University in a positive manner to all constituents.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Recruit, manage, and train regional volunteers for meaningful and purposeful involvement for the Alumni Association and related university initiatives as applicable. 2. Work with volunteers to plan and implement regional events and develop new and engaging outreach techniques. 3. Assist alumni chapters in event planning and logistics, chapter budget management, communication outreach, philanthropic efforts, and coordinate existing alumni chapter scholarship programs as applicable. 4. Oversee and expand the Alumni Association’s current student outreach with particular focus on website, social media, special events, educational programming, and alumni networking opportunities. 5. Collaborate with Director of Annual Giving on engagement of the AppS.T.A.T. (Students Today Alumni Tomorrow) student organization and its necessary functions and initiatives related to fundraising and special events focused on connections with the Appalachian Alumni Association (Senior Class Gift, #iBackAPP Day, etc.). 6. Serve as staff liaison for the Alumni-Student Connections Committee of Alumni Council. 7.Coordinate the staff management of the Alumni Council; provide unit leadership and oversight of Administrative Support Specialist position for Council meeting logistics, communications with Council executive committee and general Council membership, assistance with Alumni Awards program coordination, Council membership activities, etc. 8. Collaborate with the University Program Associate in the coordination of alumni association’s away football tailgates and other related special events. 9. Serve as staff adviser for the Appalachian Student Ambassador organization, working collaboratively with the staff liaisons from Office of Admissions and Office of the Chancellor in coordinating the execution of the student organization’s overall mission. 10. Work with alumni, faculty, staff, and students to further the mission of the Alumni Association. 11. Maintain oversight of the budget functions of the Alumni Chapter program, African American Alumni Network, and Appalachian Student Ambassadors. 12. Coordinate the staff retreat and the unit’s strategic focus areas and goals implementation. 13. Supervise the Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs position and oversee efforts of current student outreach, young alumni programming, away-game tailgates and other alumni special events.
Master's Degree preferred; three to five years' experience in events planning, volunteer management, public relations and marketing and experience in a university setting preferred.
