The Data Administration team (DA), as a part of University Decision Support (UDS), manages institutional data in the Northeastern reporting environment and provides reliable, accurate, secure and accessible data to meet strategic needs at all levels of the campus. “Institutional data” is data relevant to the planning, managing, operating, and auditing of University academic and administrative activities, in particular the data available from the University’s Operational Data Store (ODS) and the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). Broad responsibilities of the Senior Data Administration Analyst (SDAA) include but are not limited to participating in data governance initiatives via ongoing and newly developed data governance forums, documenting data policies/guidelines and data definitions, facilitating data access and use activities, providing user training, and monitoring data quality.
The SDAA will be a dedicated member of the University Decision Support (UDS) team responsible for ensuring a successful implementation and ongoing growth and development of the University's Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), Business Intelligence (BI) and Analytics Capabilities. This position performs a variety of business intelligence functions, training and documentation functions which require business and administration experience, considerable experience with multiple reporting tools and sufficient technical/analytical expertise in a complex organizational environment.
Under the guidance of the Director of Data Administration (DDA) and the leadership of the Associate Vice Provost of UDS, the candidate will work closely with business partners, including colleges and non-academic business units, and the ITS Business Analysis team to understand and gather functional requirements, to document end users' reporting and analytical needs, and to assist in transforming these needs into Business Intelligence specifications used in the design, development, and deployment of EDW data via the Cognos reporting tool. The SDAA will work collaboratively with Data Administration staff to create and maintain metadata documentation, and participate in user support and training.
The SDAA will be expected to develop a solid foundational understanding of critical business concepts used by the functional business units within the University to develop reporting solutions. The SDAA will work closely with Data Custodians, Institutional Research team members, Business Intelligence Systems Analysts, Data Architects, and other ITS resources in all phases of implementing a BI and analytics solution. The SDAA will also support maintenance of existing functionality in the Cognos reporting environment.
The SDAA will monitor data quality in the EDW reporting environment through the audits and provide and improve data definitions to support users' reporting abilities.
This position will support the user reporting community through user training, clear and concise documentation, data issues resolution, query and report writing language(s), and data quality improvements. The SDAA will also aid in maintenance of the Data Administration Office's main SharePoint site by helping with Cognos Community related information (promoting Cognos trainings and updates, and preserving documentation from all data governance related forums).
Additionally, the SDAA will act as a liaison between the University reporting community, UDS, and the ITS team, remaining closely involved with all aspects of the University's reporting functions. The SDAA will serve as the key person responsible for Cognos development and training as well as supporting the DA team in management of ODS/Argos reporting community training and data definitions. The SDAA also facilitates the process for requesting access to the Cognos reporting environment and works closely with IT Security to monitor access to this environment.
Skills and Experience oAbility to analyze user data requirements, translate those requirements into technical specifications, and then work closely with ITS counterparts to ensure BI and analytics solutions meet customer needs. This position is specifically housed in the functional/business area so that the BI work is approached from the user perspective, but a technical background is needed since it is critical to work closely with ITS counterparts oTechnical skills and the ability to learn and apply new technologies oExperience with the Software Development Life Cycle and understanding of systems architecture, systems testing, and software development best practices oUnderstand report/dashboard design and standards and the ability to prototype using tools such as Excel or PowerPoint. oExperience with metadata management and data cataloging is a plus oAbility to communicate effectively with clients, staff, and partners. Requires both oral and written communication capabilities. Technical Background oUnderstanding of SQL query language required oFamiliarity with design and creation of operational and analytical reports for end users oUnderstanding of data warehousing best practices and methodologies, including Kimball, Inmon, etc. oFamiliarity with design and implementation of dimensional models, OLAP cubes, and other analytic database objects oKnowledge of one or more industry leading BI applications such as Cognos, Business Objects, or OBIEE and/or experience with MDX query language a plus oUnderstanding of Blackboard Analytics, IBM Cognos 10 & Cognos Analytics (Cognos 11) Business Intelligence components and relationships oExperience working with Brio, Toad, Tableau, IData Cook Book desired
