Under the supervision of the Director and with guidance from the KSC Management Team, the Communications Manager is responsible for setting, implementing and analyzing the strategic direction of marketing and communications for Kirby Student Center. The Communications Manager serves a number of roles within the department: planning and implementing communication and marketing initiatives; designing and creating written and graphic work utilizing multiple media methods; develop in g, maintaining and assessing Kirby's on line presence ; and providing communication leadership and guidance for UMD student groups. This position also coordinates Kirby Student Center's involvement with scholarship and award opportunities and works with campus partners and committees to achieve the strategic goals of Kirby Student Center. The Communications Manager serves as the business advisor to The Bark, UMD's online and print student newspaper. This position requires occasional evening/weekend work.<br /><br /><strong>Duties & Responsibilities:</strong><br />• DEPARTMENTAL COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETING 45%.<br />Provide strategic direction in identifying and prioritizing communication and marketing opportunities for Kirby Student Center. Create and implement annual communications and marketing plans in conjunction with the Kirby Student Center (KSC) Management Team, to include areas such as promotion of Kirby Student Center, internal and external events, summer camps and conferences, student activities, off-campus housing, and "The Center" e-newsletter. Coordinate and monitor the use of the Kirby Student Center and UMD brands. Design and create electronic and print materials to support the c01mnunications and marketing plans, including event/activity photography and basic video production. Develop and monitor annual budget for communications and marketing. Assist the Kirby Management Team with the creation and presentation of large-scale departmental communications including the KSC Annual Report and proposal and presentation to the UMD Student Services Fee Committee. Serve as a member of the Kirby Student Center Events & Conferences Marketing Team, the Student Life Marketing Committee, the UMD Communicators Council, and the UMD Social Media Committee.<br /><br />• ONLINE IDENTITY MANAGEMENT 25%<br />Develop and manage content for Kirby Student Center website (www.d.umn.edu/kirby) and associated KSC program webpages. Monitor Kirby webpage analytics and utilize data to optimize content and reach target audiences. Manage Kirby Student Center's social media presence to provide posts and responses consistent with Kirby Student Center's social media voices. Serve as departmental technical expert on Campus Labs ' "Engage" platform ("UMD BulldogLink") and expand utilization of BulldogLink. Support Kirby Leadership Institute through the creation and maintenance of systems within Engage/BulldogLink that assist with communication and tracking of student progress in the Leadership Institute. Create new activities and programs within BulldogLink to support departmental efforts. Manage content and administration of digital signage within Kirby Student Center, including management of Carousel software for digital signage.<br /><br />• STUDENT DEVELOPMENT & LEADERSHIP 20%<br />Support The Bark student media by serving as a business advisor for the advertising and financial student staff. Provide budget oversight and teach staff to read applicable budget reports. Partner with the editorial advisor in providing direction and guidance for The Bark and serve as a voting member of the UMD Board of Publications. Assist The Bark with preparation of funding request to Student Services Fee Committee (proposal and presentation). Serve as a resource to student groups (registered student organizations and campus life programs) for questions and best practices in marketing, social media, University brand requirements, and design. Hire, train, and supervise the Kirby Student Center communications intern. Assess student employee performance according to established departmental goals, objectives, and learning outcomes.<br /><br />• SCHOLARSHIP & AWARDS COMMUNICATION, OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED 10%.<br />Monitor scholarship and award opportunities at the campus, local, regional, and national levels through UMD programs and professional organizations. Communicate award and scholarship opportunities and coordinate staff and student nominations for scholarships and awards. Monitor deadlines and ensure nominations are submitted on time. Other duties as assigned by the Director in support of the programs and services of Kirby Student Center, the Division of Student Life, or the University of Minnesota Duluth.</p>
<p><strong>Required Qualifications:</strong><br />• Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing , Art/Graphic Design or related field plus 2 years professional experience; or equivalent education and experience equal to 6 years<br />• Strong written and oral communication skills, to include report writing/editing and publication and online content development<br />• Experience designing and creating written and graphic work in multiple media methods (print, online, electronic)<br /><br /><strong>Preferred Qualifications:</strong><br />• Demonstrated experience autonomously managing multiple projects and priorities, to include programs/activities with different constituent groups<br />• Demonstrated experience communicating with multiple and varied target audiences<br />• Demonstrated experience working to improve the educational experience of diverse people<br />• Demonstrated experience in web development and use of web analytics tools<br />• Demonstrated experience creating and implementing communication and marketing plans<br />• Experience working in a post-secondary (higher education) institution<br /> </p>
