Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is an independent coeducational, college preparatory day school serving Pre-Kindergarten (including 2 year olds) through grade 12. Founded in 1966, the school has a current enrollment of approximately 879 students and 180 employees located on our 100 acre Main campus or our three acre Harbour View campus, both in Suffolk, Virginia. We are seeking an energetic and dedicated individual to teach and demonstrate best practices in Visual and/or Graphic Arts, including graphic design and digital photography for Upper School students in grades 9 - 12.
This individual will be capable of teaching across multiple media including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and computer graphic design and 35mm/digital photography.
Being an independent school, the Upper School Visual Arts teacher will have significant latitude to shape the program in concert with the school’s mission. This individual will be expected to hold the highest standards of educational professionalism while engaging children from grades 9 – 12. This individual should be able to work in collaborative atmosphere, while continuing to advance the current Visual Arts program, and support all other programs of the school.
We seek candidates who possess the following education, experience, capabilities and qualities:
Plan and instruct lessons for Upper School Art and Photography for various age level students in Upper School.
Serve as an Upper School Advisor.
Develop a love for art in students and attract students to elective art courses.
Interact effectively and maintain open communication with parents, students, faculty, staff and administration.
Work with Visual Arts Department Chair and the Head of Upper School to order all supplies, materials, and equipment necessary for art and photography related activities.
Work closely with the Visual Arts Department Chair, other Art instructors as well as other faculty and staff in the Middle and Lower Schools to advance the Visual Arts program.
Work with the Director of Communications & Public Relations and the Director of Admissions to promote awareness about the art and photography program through school communications and other relevant audiences.
Utilize technology to facilitate instruction and enhance learning.
Participate in divisional and whole school meetings and professional development activities.
Contribute to the full life of the school through sponsoring student clubs and organizations, and coaching and/or building relationships within the local art community.
Perform other duties as assigned by the administration and in accordance with the Employee Handbook and expectations of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.
Support the mission and philosophy of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Visual Arts or Art Education or related field.
Valid Teaching Certificate in the content area of Art Education is preferred.
Demonstrated experience in the knowledge and teaching of Visual Arts and Digital Photography.
Prior experience as a Visual Arts educator is preferred, with 2-5 years experience.
Strong background in the infusion of technology into instructional practice.
Technology proficiency is essential including use of Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, and the use of SmartBoards and digital projectors preferably in an Apple environment. Proficiency with Google Educational Apps, Blackbaud, WhippleHill, On Campus and On Message experience preferred.
