As the Houston Symphony embarks on its next 100 years of music-making, the organization is seeking a key leader within the Marketing & Communications team to direct efforts in engaging with various publics in support of the Symphony’s vision to become one of the most accessible, relevant, inclusive, differentiated, innovative and celebrated orchestral institutions.
We are looking for an ambitious, hard-working, strategic and experienced communications professional to help shepherd the Houston Symphony’s bold vision through engaging story-telling and content creation, leveraging the latest communications and PR strategies.
This position directs, drives and oversees PR strategy and planning, institutional messaging, social media and media relations, while supervising the production of marketing videos.
In collaboration with the CMO and Senior Management of the Symphony:
Develop and implement a strategic public relations plan to raise the profile of the Houston Symphony brand locally, nationally and internationally
Create an institutional messaging platform to address multiple audiences in order to create stronger consistency of voice across the institution and to emphasize organizational values and vision
Participate in creating and tracking organizational-wide strategic planning initiatives that apply to public relations & communications
Direct efforts to increase coverage of Symphony concert and fundraising events in local, national and international media, including traditional, hybrid and social media, with special focus on:
Leveraging world-class musicians, conductors, guest artists and Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada
Increasing awareness of the Houston Symphony brand and associated brand attributes
Developing targeted media relations strategies to help support concert revenue goals; which includes support for subscriptions and single tickets
Identifying unique story ideas and angles for media – including but not limited to musicians’ personal stories/hobbies and personal accomplishments as well as unique angles related to programming, guest artists, innovation, concert experience and more
Recognizing concert sponsors and donors
Oversee public/media relations efforts in both proactive and reactive situations, in collaboration with the PR Coordinator
Incorporate social media into overall communications strategies. Create and oversee organic content for social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) to help build brand awareness and increase loyalty and engagement among core and non-traditional audiences, leveraging, key musical milestones and events, as well as concert information
Serve as spokesperson and provide strategic communications counsel to CEO and other members of the senior management team during crisis, major organizational changes and unexpected events. Responsible for media training staff and members of the orchestra and developing relevant communications materials including talking points, news releases, fact sheets, FAQs, and executive briefing documents.
Develop and maintain strong and consistent relationships with local and regional media outlets in Houston
Establish and maintain relationships with elected and appointed officials at the city, county, state and federal levels, arranging and supervising cultivation events as needed
Draft letters and speeches for president, CEO, chairman, or music director as needed
In conjunction with Marketing & Communications colleagues, supervise press and staff photographers and videographers at concerts in accordance with the Orchestra’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (labor contract)
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field
Eight to ten years communications and/or media relations experience
Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills
Demonstrated success in the creation of compelling content (blogs, videos, etc.)
Excellent interpersonal and diplomacy skills, and a positive, team-oriented approach. Experience supervising a team
Goal-oriented, extremely proactive and self-motivated
Proven decision-making and problem resolution skills
Near-term and long-term/strategic planning and organizational skills
Experience in managing a team of multiple employees
Facility with use of Microsoft Suite and PowerPoint applications; Adobe InDesign and Photoshop experience a plus
A knowledge of and appreciation for symphonic music desirable
Fluent in Spanish (speaking and writing) a huge plus
