In 2010, the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC), a grassroots advocacy organization, launched Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®, with a goal of knowing how to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020. NBCC’s blueprint for Breast Cancer Deadline 2020® is a strategic plan of action for knowing how to prevent the development and spread of breast cancer. Since 1991, NBCC has been at the vanguard of the breast cancer movement – elevating breast cancer to an issue of national significance, leveraging billions of federal dollars for research and care, and empowering tens of thousands of breast cancer survivors to become effective advocates for themselves, and for all those at risk of breast cancer.
Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, Chief of Staff, the Vice President, Public Policy position is responsible for developing, implementing and leading the overall strategy for public policy and federal, state and grassroots advocacy. The Vice President, Public Policy will maintain up to date knowledge of all policies at the federal and state level that may have an effect on breast cancer issues and on NBCC’s agenda and develops strategies to address those policies. This individual also oversees the development of policy positions based on the Board approved public policy agenda and develops and implements strategies to advance this agenda. The Vice President, Public Policy ensures thoughtful analysis of policy options and direction and activates the membership to achieve NBCC’s agenda through grassroots efforts.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
A senior level position, the person in this position shall possess: Bachelor’s degree in public policy or related field a must; law degree preferred. Minimum ten (10) years government relations experience and extensive Capitol Hill, legislative, healthcare and public policy knowledge. Ability to interact at the highest level of professionalism with all grassroots advocates, consultants, corporate and board contacts, White House, state, federal and local officials and the general public. Strong analytical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills, the ability to speak and write persuasively and with clarity, strong organizational skills, adaptability to changing requirements, resourcefulness and creativity, strong attention to detail, a proven track record of being able to work under quick deadlines. Familiarity with breast cancer issues preferred.
