Thomas Edison State University seeks an experienced communications professional driven to tell the story of a University built to empower and support working adult students to finish their degree and change their lives and the lives of those around them. The Senior Director of Communications serves as the chief spokesperson for the University, reporting to the Chief of Staff within the Office of the President. The Senior Director of Communications will work with the university president and senior leaders across the university to advise, develop and implement communication strategies which engage both internal and external audiences. These strategies will advance TESU’s mission and vision as New Jersey’s leading university for busy, working and transitioning adults.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
In this highly collaborative, outcomes-oriented position, the incumbent will lead a team of professionals to express the value of TESU in various media, including the university website, traditional media, social media, and print, to: • Prospective and current students • National publications/industry thought leaders • State/federal agencies, elected officials and external stakeholders • Partners, both non-profit/educational and business • Internal stakeholders • Alumni and donors
Further, s/he will enhance TESU’s organic social media strategy across communications, branding and recruitment platforms as well as build presidential and executive leadership profiles in various media including website, traditional/social media, and print. As needed, the Senior Director will plan press events and staff the president and university leadership during interviews. In addition, s/he will collaboratively develop communication strategies for implementation of new academic programs and academic delivery offerings.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The director should demonstrate highly developed levels of inclusiveness, positive energy, integrity, accuracy, diplomacy, intellect, discretion and communication skills. The director should be knowledgeable in web use analytics and have a proven record with traditional media and social media strategies, as well as a background in communications planning. The director should employ excellent writing and editing skills, and speak with confidence, poise and discretion to individuals and groups in a variety of settings. The person selected will co-chair a cross-divisional Brand Awareness committee to build, unify and continuously evaluate our messaging across stakeholder groups.
Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor's degree A minimum of 5 years experience in communications/media relations Proven record of success with traditional media communication strategies Proven record of success with social media communication strategies Developed relationships within New Jersey media outlets Proven commitment to inclusiveness, including a record of communicating to and for diverse populations Familiarity with website development and analytics Supervisory experience Excellent organizational, communication and written skills
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree Experience in higher education Developed relationships with higher education national media outlets Experience working at non-traditional/adult serving institutions Speech-writing experience
