The Office of Communications and Marketing seeks to hire a strategic communicator to join the media relations team as a public relations specialist. Our team works with senior administrators, faculty, staff, and departments to generate news and feature stories to advance the university's strategic goals.
PR specialists are responsible for writing and distributing news releases, feature stories, and messages for various internal and external audiences. They develop stories and media plans in strategic areas that highlight faculty and student research expertise and impact; build and maintain trusting relationships with reporters; pitch UT experts as leading sources for local and national media; write for electronic newsletters and other in-house publications; help manage positive and negative publicity for individuals and units within the university; help with issues management and emergency communications as needed; provide training for faculty, staff, and students on talking points and media appearances; prepare monthly reports of story successes and placement for administrators, deans, department heads, and advisory boards; and mentor interns.
This person may also be called upon to help publicize events, oversee media covering events, and help the campus events director run events.
