Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Associate Director of Communications will strengthen Houston Grand Opera’s brand and raise its visibility to ensure it is recognized as one of the most highly acclaimed opera companies in the United States as well as play a lead role in telling the story of the organization through the media, publications, public relations, and print/digital mediums. He/she will work closely with the senior management team within the organization as the communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Strategize with the Director and the Senior Management Team to identify company-wide communication needs, goals and objectives;
Manage cross-company communication projects, incorporating various levels of team participation and interaction;
Serve as internal public relations manager, including drafting press releases, coordinating with outside PR agencies and media outlets, pitching story ideas, and event management;
Act as brand manager, directly managing all communication-based activities that promote, enhance and protect HGO’s brand;
Manage the editorial output of the department, including strategizing and creating editorial content for publications;
Serve as project manager for shared creative services across the organization;
Work collaboratively with Digital Manager to ensure the organization’s digital communications, including website content and development, social media activities, and newsletter production meet HGO standard;
Coordinate and supervise the creation of production photography and video with outside vendors;
Manage the distribution, storage, use, and access of HGO archives;
Manage communications expense budget;
Ensure accuracy, quality, and consistency in all departmental outputs;
Regularly evaluate communications programs to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.
Must have 5+ years of communications experience; a bachelor’s or master’s degree; dedicated writing experience required, a familiarity with Chicago manual of style a plus; working knowledge of accepted standards and current trends in design. This position requires excellent communication and writing skills, and a demonstrated ability to lead and manage a department in successful campaigns and day-to-day operations. Must have experience in leading cross-functional teams to ensure effective execution and delivery of communication plans, as well as experience managing company branding and marketing campaigns. Previous experience in non-profit or performance arts organizations is preferred; familiarity with the operatic repertoire and industry is preferred. Nights and weekend hours required.

Must be a highly motivated self-starter with excellent time-management skills, superior organizational and communication skills and the ability to independently solve problems. Established relationships with the print and broadcast media and the skill to establish and cultivate new relationships with the press corps. Ability to organize, prioritize and maintain several projects at once and sustain productivity under pressure. High priority to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. The successful candidate should have a friendly personality and be a team player, provide great attention to detail in all aspects of the job, and remain calm and responsive in dealing with others.
